PAUL A. COHEN
AGE: 87 METUCHEN
Paul A. Cohen, a dentist of 45 years, of Metuchen died after a long illness, Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Arista Care of Cedar Oaks Hospice in Edison, with his family at his side. He was 87. He was born Oct. 10, 1921, in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx.
After graduating from James Monroe High School in the Bronx, he earned a bachelor's degree from Ohio University. He went on to dental school and earned his dental degree from Temple University in 1945.
He served in the Army as a lieutenant at Fort Dix and Walter Reid Hospital. After finishing his military service, he returned to New York City to set up a dental practice.
Dr. Cohen met his wife of 60 years, Alice Rubenstein Cohen, in her senior year at Temple University. Eventually, they married on April 30, 1949, and moved to the bedroom community of Metuchen, where they raised two daughters, Leslie and Judi.
He was active in Temple Neve Shalom's congregation.
In 1952, Dr. Cohen opened a solo practice in Iselin, on Oak Tree Road, and then established the Iselin Dental Group in the early 1960s. He maintained his practice until having a stroke in November 1990. Prior to his illness, Dr. Cohen was active in various professional organizations, including dental study groups and the Academy of General Dentistry. He served as past president of the Middlesex County Dental Society and was involved in charitable work with the dental clinic at JFK Hospital.
Prior to his stroke, Dr. Cohen enjoyed playing tennis, traveling, and especially spending time with his wife and two daughters.
Survivors include his wife, Alice A. Cohen; two daughters, Leslie Cohen Schulman of Baltimore, Md., and Judi Cohen Wade of Atlanta, Ga., and his sons-in-laws, Howard Schulman and Don Wade.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at Temple Neve Shalom, 250 Grove Ave., Metuchen. Interment will be at Beth Israel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, or the National Aphasia Association.
