Peter Meehan Obituary

Peter Matthew Meehan

East Brunswick -

"He is made one with Nature: there is heard his voice in all her music"---Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Peter Matthew Meehan of East Brunswick, NJ, passed away on July 8, 2020.

He was 47. A lifelong resident of the Garden State, he attended Lawrence Brook Elementary School, Churchill Junior High School and graduated from East Brunswick High School as a member of the class of 1991. Peter was a family man and a devoted uncle and babysitter to his younger relations. He was very protective. Known for his wit, mimicry, infectious grin, and amazing sense of humor, Peter always relished a good practical joke. He loved spending summer days at the Jersey shore, Belmar in particular. Not surprisingly, "Jaws" was one of his favorite movies.

Peter was a keen amateur photographer and video-maker. Creative from an early age, he loved recording hilarious audio tapes and interviewing everyone he knew. He was a bright guy who could imitate almost any accent and his family loved when he did impressions. They still talk about the Christmas when he performed tai chi while balancing a real cat on his arm. As a toddler, Peter managed to save the day when his family ran out of gas on Thanksgiving. Peter was also a fan of art cinema, an avid collector of DVDs and books, and an indefatigable hiker. He once walked over ten hours through the night to get home when he found himself without transportation. At the age of twenty-two, Peter spent three months in Europe, traveling and teaching himself German. He hiked in Giessen and loved the Hessian countryside. While there he also found time to swim on the island of Sylt and at Travemuende Beach on the Baltic Sea.

A former employee of Shop Rite in East Brunswick, Peter made many friends there and was known for his helpfulness, honesty, and generosity. He was always willing to assist homeless friends and acquaintances.

Peter is survived by his mother Mary Ann Walker and by his siblings Maureen Meehan, Eileen Chwatek, John Meehan and Neil Meehan. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces Jeremy Boelter, Caitlyn Chwatek, Ken Chwatek, Lydia Chwatek, Owen Chwatek, Connor Meehan and Bonnie Meehan. He will be greatly missed.

Peter's family ask that you consider making a donation in his name to one of the following organizations: The National Alliance to End Homelessness, PATH (People Assisting the Homeless).

He was a nice and funny kid in school. Always had the courage to be himself which I admired but never told him. RIP, Peter.
