Robert D. Flaherty, Sr., 86, of Metuchen passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016 at his home.

Born in Newark, he has resided in Metuchen for 63 years. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. Bob retired from General Motors in Linden as a Time Standard Engineer, after 42 years. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen, where he had been a Eucharistic Minister. A true believer in giving back to his community, Bob was a volunteer at JFK Medical Center, Metuchen Seniors Inc., Metuchen cemetery Association (Hillside Cemetery), Metuchen Election Board and the Metuchen Little League. In 2009 he was honored by the Metuchen Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year.

Bob is survived by his wife, Winifred (Gallimore); his children, Donna Ann Flaherty of Peachtree City, Ga, Robert Flaherty Jr. and his spouse Tracy of Asbury, Thomas Flaherty and his spouse Lynn of Point Pleasant, Shawn Flaherty and his spouse Nergui of Jersey City, Therese Waterson and her spouse Rob of Bloomsbury, Arthur Michael Flaherty Sr. and his spouse Lisette of Metuchen, and Rich Leary of Monroe Township; his grandchildren Diana Le and her spouse Michael, Therese Ann Flaherty, Amanda Flaherty, Robert Scott Waterson, Kelcey Anne Smolders and her spouse Kenneth, Katelynn Flaherty, Arthur Michael Flaherty Jr., Daniel Michael Flaherty, Shawnn Megan Flaherty, Stanley Waterson, Luke Flaherty, Regan Flaherty, Tommy Flaherty, Kylie Jo Flaherty, and Leslie Eva Flaherty; his great-grandchildren Gabriella Alexis Le, Van Michael Le, and Winifred Grace Le.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 9:45 am from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue (Rt. 27), Metuchen followed by a 10:15 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. To the Flaherty Family: Thank you for sharing your Dad during my childhood. I have life long memories of growing up playing baseball on the Metuchen Little League fields. Mr. Flaherty, was a "players coach" who had a terrific way about him. The ability to teach baseball and life lessons that have stayed with me in sports, business and life. A strong leader, with the perfect combination of firm discipline when needed and gentle compassion when necessary. My heartfelt thanks for Mr. Flaherty's service to our country, community and his impact on my childhood. RIP

As a child I remember Bob and my Dad, Frank DeCourcey, were good friends who shared their dedication and humor for many years on the Oakland Ave. Little League field. Bob was so committed to giving back to his METUCHEN community. I will never forget your kindness, Bob. You set a wonderful example for ALL of us who knew you.
