Ruth Rechten Obituary

Ruth Elizabeth Freeland Rechten

Middletown - Ruth Elizabeth Freeland Rechten, 89, of Middletown, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 3, 2018, at Riverview Medical Hospice Center from complications of Merkel Cell Cancer.

Born to Mary and William Freeland on February 27, 1929 and raised in Jersey City, Ruth graduated from Montclair State Teachers College in December of 1950. She married Arthur William Rechten and began her teaching career in Jersey City at Lincoln High School in January of 1951. Moving to Middletown with her young family in November of 1956 she took a short period off from teaching to begin raising her family. She started her 30 year teaching career in the Middletown Public Schools teaching English in Middletown High School. In 1966 she transferred to Bayshore Junior High where she and her best friend and colleague, Barbara Guenther, created and implemented an award-winning team-teaching program in Civics and English which challenged many gifted students throughout the years and which many students have stated contributed so much to their educations.

In addition to her teaching duties at Middletown High School and Bayshore, she was the advisor for the school newspapers, The Lions Roar and Shorelines respectively, and her classes also published many outstanding literary magazines. In 1985, when she returned to MTHS North, she was named Governor's Teacher of the Year.

Ruth retired from MTHS North in 1992. However, that retirement was short lived when she became an adjunct professor at Monmouth University, where she compassionately and effectively taught and evaluated student teachers. Remaining on staff until she was almost 81 years old, she finally completed in 2009 an exceptional and lengthy career in education. Ruth bestowed a true love for education upon so many students, many of whom have themselves become outstanding teachers. Always encouraging the best from her students, she emphasized critical thinking, hard work, humor, and respect for others.

Committed to helping others, Ruth touched many lives as Mother Advisor to the local chapter of the Rainbow Girls at the Masonic Lodge in Atlantic Highlands until 1975. A long-term member of the Atlantic Highlands United Methodist Church, Ruth served for many years as Outreach chairperson.

Ruth's home was always open to those who needed a place to stay. She once coordinated 27 French students on an exchange program and holidays always had a new face at the table. In 1981 one very special exchange teacher arrived in America, Lynne Bramwell, and she has become a very special part of the family.

Ruth loved to travel and blessed her family with many trips around the globe. Setting foot on all seven continents, she passed the love of travel to her grandchildren. Each grandchild got to pick where he or she would travel with grandma. She traveled to an eventful trip to Kenya, Egypt, and Switzerland with her eldest grandsons Gregory and Matthew. Next, she took Michael skiing in Chile and experienced the wonders of Machu Picchu in Peru, Kati and Susan tagged along to keep grandma company! Her next trip was when she spent two weeks backpacking with Kati through seven European countries in 2009, in Ruth's backpacking style by that time--five star resorts! The last trip was with Sarah to NYC experiencing the sights and sounds of the city and attending several exciting Broadway shows. Grandma was not able to travel with Tim so he's been blessed him with materials needed to help with his art education.

Survivors include her daughters, Susan Day and her husband Greg, and their children: Gregory & Ashley Day, Matthew & Tory Day, Michael & Erin Day, Kati Day and her fiancé Joseph Schisselbauer, Robin Taylor and her husband, Rob and their children, Sarah and Tim, her son, Gary Rechten, and her most beloved four great-grandchildren: Jack, Owen, Alexa and Oliver Day. Gigi loves you! Ruth will be missed by the many friends she leaves behind all over the world and her second family the entire Guenther gang!

A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, September 2, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad Street, Red Bank, NJ. On Monday, September 3, we will gather at Atlantic Highlands Methodist Church, 96 - 3rd Ave, AH, N.J. at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St Jude Children's Foundation or Merkel Cell Research.

Not sure what to say?

Mrs Rechten was my 9th grade English teacher 50 years ago. Probably the best teacher I ever had including college. She had a great influence on me especially with my writing skills. Mrs Rechten would patiently go through each paper with me and have me re-write it - sometimes there would be 3 rewrites. And in the end I became a pretty decent writer.

I think of her every now and then and when discussions come up about education and teaching I quickly bring up her name as an example of what a teacher should be. We need more like her.

I'm so sorry. I was a close friend of Robin's and slept over often. Mrs. Recten was fun to hang with(especially for a parent). When she picked up her new Fiat, we went to the drive in to see The Omen.

Ms. Rechten was my 9th Grade English Teacher, which she combined with Ms. Guenther's Civic's class to make Civics/English. It was a brilliant way to teach, so far ahead of her time. Everyone looked forward to her class and although I am in my late 50's now, I remember what she taught us. She had us all over to her home for a swim party after the school year. She really cared about her students and will be lovingly remembered and forever missed. My condolences to her family. God Bless you, Ms. Rechten.

Mrs. Rechten was my 9th grade English teacher at Bayshore Junior High, and the one teacher who truly made a difference in my life. It was she who opened my eyes to the joy of writing. She prodded and encouraged us to produce our very best work, and I remember how thrilled I was when she told me I had already discovered my voice as a writer. It was entirely due to her that I pursued the career I've loved as a writer and editor. My condolences to her family; it sounds like she was not only a fine teacher, but a wonderful lady.

I am sad for Ruth's dear family. Mrs. Rechten was an amazing teacher and role model. I was a student in her first years of teaching English at Lincoln H.S. in Jersey City. She was an inspiration to us all.

Mrs. Rechten was one of my favorite teachers in my 9th grade year at Bayshore. She was the reason for me joining the class on a trip to Germany on spring break in 1971. Love to the family and may she rest peacefully.

I have so many fond memories! There is no way to measure the impact she had on SO Many lives. Even after leaving Bayshore I spent many weekends at Ruth's home with her family and many memorable trips to NYC. You will live on as one of Bayshore's greatest!

I have so many wonderful memories of the time I spent with Ruth, her family and friends. My thoughts go out to all those who were close to her.

Jeannine and I send our condolences to Ruth's immediate and extended families. My earliest memory of Ruth was as a student, armed with her copy of Warners and a red pen. As a colleague, I stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and listened to our Honors students recite the Gettysburg Address. She touched many lives.

To Susan and all of Ruth's family,
Reon and I send our condolences. When I was a newly hired teacher at Bayshore I was in awe of the legendary Civics/English teachers, Barbara and Ruth. I soon learned that the legend was well deserved. Ruth soon became an admired colleague whose infectious laugh and kind advice were happily and warmly received. She was beloved by both her students and her colleagues. As teachers we may never know the full extent of the impact we have on the lives of our charges. But I'm sure that Ruth had a pretty good idea of her influence because so many of her students made it a point to come back to Bayshore or High School North to tell her! May the pain of you loss soon be replaced with the comfort of happy memories of the love and life you shared with Ruth.
