Sarah Fagan Obituary

Sarah Crabbe Fagan

AGE: 76 • Toms River

Sarah Crabbe Fagan, age 76, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 9, 2011 in her lifelong Toms River home surrounded by her loving family. Born Feb. 26, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA to Harriet Stevens White and Daniel McEwen Crabbe, he was an owner of the Double Trouble Company, now Double Trouble State Park. She was a 1953 graduate of Toms River High School. In 1955, she graduated from Bennett Junior College in Millbrook, NY. Following her 1957 marriage to Howland Croft Bottomley, the couple sailed their 34 foot yawl to the Bahamas where they built a house in George Town, Exuma. They lived there for seven adventure-filled years before the marriage ended in divorce. She was married to her second husband, James Louis Fagan, for 27 years until his death in 1996. She was an active member of the Toms River Yacht Club, where she was a past president of the ladies auxiliary. One of her greatest pleasures was the many years of tennis she played as a member of the Toms River Country Club. She was active in numerous bridge groups, was an active member of the Friends of the Toms River Library, and had a love of travel and the theatre. She worked for more than 20 years as a claims manager for the former Broome-Hourigan Insurance Company, retiring in 2000.

Above all, she was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her two daughters, Sharpe Bottomley Beaton of Pt. Pleasant Beach and Louise Bottomley Corish of Sag Harbor, NY; granddaughters, Rachel Louise Beaton, Olivia Sarah Corish and Abigail McEwen Corish; her two sons-in-law, Mark E. Beaton and H. Aidan Corish; her brother, Daniel C. McEwen Crabbe of Locust, and her loving companion of many years, Joseph I. Diamond. She has been an enormous presence for everyone whose lives she touched and her memory will live on in our hearts.

A service will be held, Thursday, June 16th at 11:00a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Bay Head. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of the Toms River Library, 101 Washington Street, Toms River, NJ 08753. Louise and Sharpe,

I am deeply saddened by your mother's passing.
She was always a lady--always.

Louise, each and every time I saw you, you greeted me with a warm smile and a kind heart. It is clear you are the same classy lady your Mother was.

I am grateful for our friendship.

Dear Sharpe and Louise, I have always admired your mother. She was beautiful on the inside and outside...and was always so kind and friendly to others. My mom told me how both of you have taken such good care of your mom during her illness. You are both an inspiration to all of us. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

This was one grand lady with class to spare. A true Ocean County beauty! With her goes a significant piece of "Old Toms River" history. Sharpe and Louise, thanks to you, the dignity of your Mother's passing will become a part of her legacy and our memory of her. You are to be admired for all of the sacrifices you made and the care and compassion you showed at a time of great personal sadness. We all thank you. Godspeed Sarah, it was always an absolute pleasure.

I was saddened to hear of Sarah's death. We graduated together from TRHS and after college roomed together in NYC. I will never forget watching Sarah enjoy Victor Borge on Broadway. What a wonderful laugh she had.
