MT. ALTO — Maurice K. "Bub" Smith, 66, of Mt. Alto, passed away February 4, 2014, at the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg.
He was born March 25, 1947, in Ripley, to the late Clyde B. and Cornelia (Kessel) Smith. His sisters, Louise Hannum and Vivian Boston, also preceded him in death.
Maurice served his country in the United States Navy, 1965 through 1969 while serving one tour off the shore of Viet Nam, on board the USS D.J. Buckley, and one year at DaNang, Viet Nam.
He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum, Ravenswood, and was a member of the United Steelworkers Union, Local #5668. He was also a life member of the VFW, Ripley.
Survivors include his sons, J. David Smith, of Athens, and Isaac Austin Smith, of Partyville, Wis.; daughter, Cheryl L. Booth of Boone, N.C.; brother, Clyde B. "Joe" Smith, II, of Millerstown, Pa.; sisters, Janice Shirley of Richmond, Ohio, Ardis Shirley of Mt. Alto and Doris Strosnider of Winchester, Va.; seven grandchildren, and a large family of nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, with Minister Doug Petty officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Given, with full military honors by American Legion Post #107, Ripley. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
