Morton Gibbons-Neff Obituary

Morton (Tony) Gibbons-Neff, III, age 84, of Chestertown, Maryland died peacefully on January 26, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Tony was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on April 26, 1939 to Florence and Morton Gibbons-Neff, Jr. He grew up on the family farm, Clovelly, in Devon, PA and graduated from The Haverford School in 1957. He attended Cornell University and transferred to Washington College when his parents moved the farm to Chestertown in 1959. There, he and his father operated a large grain and black angus operation. In the late 90s, his son Stormy joined the family business and expanded the operations to include a tree nursery and landscaping services.

A true patriot, Tony served proudly in the Maryland National Guard from 1960-1968 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Preston Ashley Post 228.

Throughout the years, Tony enjoyed sailing and racing with family and friends on the Chesapeake Bay and in New England and Florida. Tony loved the Eastern Shore life, including hunting, fishing, and, of course, crabbing. Born an Eagles football fan, he later held season tickets to the Baltimore Colts, and left us as a Ravens fan.

Tony served on the Board and as President of Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital Foundation. He also supported countless conservation and agricultural organizations including Ducks Unlimited, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Chester River Foundation, Sultana Education Foundation, National Corn Growers Association, Maryland Farm Bureau, and American Nursery & Landscaping Association.

Tony married the love of his life and best friend Donna Pennington in 1965 in St. David's, Pennsylvania. He is survived by wife, his daughter Amy Hitt (David), his son Stormy (Michelle), four grandchildren (Davis and Henry Hitt, Lauren and Spencer Gibbons-Neff); his brother Henry (Easton, Maryland) and a multitude of cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers Mitchell (Darien, CT) and Peter (Rosemont, PA).

The family would especially like to thank all the wonderful caregivers and friends who helped them navigate life's challenges with dignity, faith, and humility.

Services will be private, and a celebration of life will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Echo Hill Outdoor School, Sultana Education Foundation, or U.S. Patriot Sailing.
