Thomas Speakman Obituary

Thomas W. Speakman, Sr. of Still Pond, MD passed away peacefully at his home on July 4, 2025. He was 80.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey on August 15, 1944, to the late Levis and Gladys Willar Speakman. Tom was a 1962 graduate of Pennsbury High School. After high school he graduated from Delaware Valley College in May of 1966 and in June married his high school sweetheart, Sue (Norris) Speakman. A year later, he earned his master's degree in Horticulture from Michigan State University.

Tom worked with Grundstom Company in Glenview, Illinois until he was drafted by the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam as a first lieutenant before he was honorably discharged.

Tom was part owner of Moon Nurseries and Rickert Landscaping in Yardley, Pennsylvania for 19 years. His work earned him a presidential award from First Lady Rosalind Carter.

In 1989 he moved to Still Pond where he fulfilled his dream of starting Speakman Nurseries & Landscaping.

Tom was a past board member of the Kent County Farm Bureau, a member of the forestry board, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, and shooting in addition to maintaining a fruit orchard and an asparagus field.

In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by his brothers William and Donald Speakman.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne Speakman; son, Tom Speakman, Jr. (Kelly) of Worton; Daughter Patty Hamsher (Doug) of Cordova; Sister Suzanne Murray (Neal) of Hilton Head, SC; Grandchildren, Megan and Will Speakman, and Gabriella and Sariah Hamsher.

A service will be held Saturday August 9, 2025, at 11am at Chestertown Presbyterian Church 905 Gateway Drive Chestertown, MD 21620. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Williamson Trade School, Compass Regional Hospice, or Presbyterian Church of Chestertown. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home www.fhnfuneralhome.com

I was very sad to learn of Tom's passing. Sue and family you have my deepest condolences. Tom was a can do kind of guy that I admired very much. He always found a way to get the job done and with a smile. God Bless
