Christa Pumphrey, 84, passed away at home on July 28, 2024.
She was born March 7, 1940 in Schwedt on the Oder in Brandenburg, Germany to Fritz Welk and Olga Adamus. Christa met Francis (Frank) Pumphrey while he was stationed in Germany. They were married in Vorsfelde, Germany on January 30, 1960. They moved to several places adding three children to their family along the way, eventually retiring and living in Sierra Vista for the past 50 years. Christa spent many happy years with her German and American families visiting back and forth in both countries.
Christa spent 21 years working in the Sierra Vista school system as a teaching assistant. She was a member of the Village Meadows Baptist Church, where she was active in the Women of the Word and the senior Sonshiners groups. She enjoyed quilting, jigsaw puzzles, Family game nights, Bunco, lunches with groups of friends, and being a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Christa is survived by her husband of 64 years, Frank; their children (and spouses), Angela (Russ) Thompson, Monica (Brady) Englestead and Rodney (Deborah) Pumphrey; grandchildren Amanda Thompson, Darryl (Clarissa) Thompson, Madison Englestead, Carsten Englestead, Jessica Wells, Shanna (Nick) Inclan, Ashley (Ben) Higgins; great grandchildren Kafele Wells, Mikhail Inclan, Aleksandr Inclan and Wrigley Higgins.
The family would like to thank Casa de la Paz Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care of Christa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at the Village Meadows Baptist Church, 1407 El Camino Real, Sierra Vista. After the service, burial will be at the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1300 S Buffalo Soldier Trail, Sierra Vista.
