David Alan Watkins, MSG (US Army ret.) of Sierra Vista, AZ, a devoted husband, loving father and proud veteran departed peacefully from this world on October 10, 2025, at the age of 85. He lived a life rich in purpose and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Dave, born November 25, 1939, in Shevlin, MN, to Charles and Olga Watkins, was a dedicated husband, loving father, and an honorable veteran. His legacy of service and compassion continues to inspire our family. Throughout his life, Dave exhibited an unwavering commitment to his country and his loved ones. He had a distinguished military career, retiring from the Army at Fort Huachuca in 1980, then continued to serve in Army Intelligence, ultimately retiring from Civil Service in 2004.
He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Verna Watkins, their three children, Letitia Wright, Mona Caldwell (Brian), and Alan Watkins (Mollie). His legacy continues through his eleven adored grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, who all brought immense joy. He also leaves behind his sister Patricia Berg, brother Michael Watkins, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as five brothers and five sisters.
Beyond his professional life, Dave was a man of unwavering principles who instilled in us the importance of standing up for what is right, demonstrating integrity in every action, and embracing a strong moral compass. His hands, though often calloused from work, were incredibly skilled and always ready to help. Whether he was meticulously crafting beautiful pieces through his woodworking or selflessly assisting friends and neighbors with emergency home and auto repairs, he approached every task with expertise and generosity. In his golden years, his greatest joy blossomed in the kitchen, where he delighted in baking countless batches of his famous cookies, sharing them generously with family and friends.
Dave's quiet strength, boundless generosity, and steadfast love will be profoundly missed. He taught us not just how to live, but how to live with purpose, kindness, and an unshakeable belief in the good in people. While our hearts ache with his absence, we find solace in the memories he left behind and the enduring impact he had on each of our lives.
A memorial service will take place at the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, located at 1300 S Buffalo Soldier Trail, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635, on October 31, 2025, at 1 p.m..
