Luz Maria (Escobar Castro) Salaverria passed away on May 16, 2024 with her family by her side. She was born on March 3, 1928, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to Roque Escobar and Agustina Castro. She was the third out of 8 siblings.
She married Luis Radomin Salaverria on April 4, 1953. In 2019 Luz and Luis celebrated 66 years of marriage. She was a proud ARMY spouse of 25 years and stood by her husband during his U.S. Army career. This included domestic assignments and one foreign assignment in Panama.
Luz attended the University of Puerto Rico and received an Associate Degree in Business Commerce. She taught high school in Puerto Rico and worked at Marshall's Department Store as a manager. She was very active with the St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Sierra Vista, AZ. She was also active in the Legion of Mary in Sierra Vista, where she participated in feeding the homeless during soup night.
Her close friends and family remember her as an avid BINGO player and her occasional trips to Las Vegas to gamble. She waited with great anticipation hoping the next number called would win her the Jackpot when playing BINGO at the NCO Club. She was an excellent cook, and her family and friends enjoyed her homemade Puerto Rican dishes, especially during the holidays.
She was loving and deeply cared for her daughter and grandchildren but asserted her discipline when needed. Her strong faith in God guided her throughout her life.
She is survived by her daughter Doris Mitchell, four grandchildren Miguel Luis Cervantes, Cristina Maria Cervantes, Alejandro Jorge Cervantes, Aiden Mitchell and one great grandson, Gabriel Reynaldo Cervantes, and siblings Roquin and Iris Escobar.
