Carl Phillips Obituary
Carl L. Phillips
Murrayville - Carl L. Phillips, age 86, peacefully went to heaven on April 5, 2025, at his home in Murrayville, IL. He was born on November 20, 1938, in Berdan, IL, the son of Carl Truman and Osie Barbara (Suttles) Phillips.
Carl had several passions throughout his life. First and foremost, he was a Loving Husband, Dad, Papa and Great-Grandpa. On a windy day, January 18, 1959, he married his wife, Wanda Faye (Guthrie), in Carrolton at the United Methodist Church in front of their family and friends. They were married for 66 years. She survives; along with their two children, Terry (Dawn) Phillips of Nortonville and Catrenia (John/Randy) Roach of Godfrey. Carl's legacy can be seen through his seven grandchildren who also survive, Jake (Danielle) Phillips, Chelsea Phillips, Nikki (Cody) Evans, Zachary (Carol) Phillips, Mallory (Aaron) Shaw, Phillip/Alex (Lauren) Roach, and John Patrick/JP Roach. As well as being survived by his 13 great-grandchildren, Pistol and Colt Phillips, Paislee Phillips, Emma, Huck and Clay Evans, Carson, Mackenzie and Sophia Shaw and Aiden Lockhart, Oliver McLaughlin, Jace Hipkins-Phillips, and Thatcher Barrett.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Merl Truman Phillips, Carlos Floyd Phillips and Larry Lee Phillips. Carl was a member of the Murrayville United Methodist Church for 58 years and sang in the choir for 30 of those 58. He had a distinguished career at AC Humko as a machine mechanic for 46 and a half years and he retired in 2007.
Carl was an avid softball player and umpire soon after they moved to Murrayville in 1966. He joined the Murrayville Volunteer Fire Department in 1973 and was a volunteer for 30 years.
Carl's deepest passion was his genealogy for several family lines and he enjoyed this tremendously. Along with Eddie Secrest they published the book "Cemeteries of Greene County, Illinois" and was honored by Mrs. Florence Hutchinson for this accomplishment.
Among his passion he also enjoyed the following hobbies: all forms of hunting, filming and photography, antique tractor restoration and pulling, muzzleloader shooting and air shows.
While Carl will be dearly missed, he ran his race and finished his course.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Murrayville United Methodist Church with family receiving friends starting at 10 a.m. Daws Family Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made to one of the following: Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society, Murrayville Volunteer Fire Department and or the Murrayville United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the hospice care team for their compassion and support during Carl's final days.
