Jack Carson Obituary

Jack E. Carson, 81, of Virginia, died Saturday evening, May 19, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born Dec. 24, 1930, in Virginia, the son of John and Wilma Taylor Carson. He married Romona Johnson on Jan. 14, 1950, in Virginia, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, John Carson of Jacksonville and Mike Carson (partner, Susan Young) of Virginia; three grandchildren, Jared Carson of Philadelphia, Jessica Carson of Virginia and Cody Carson of Lakenheath, England; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Carson, Emily Carson, Lily Carson, Sam Cox and Jack Cox. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by Mary and Tom Hare, in whose home he was raised.

Mr. Carson served with the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves and enjoyed a long career as a meatcutter. He was first employed with Birnbaum's Packing Plant and later with Birnbaum's Grocery Store. He served several years as a meatcutter and manager of the Virginia Locker Plant prior to working with several area grocery stores. He joined Oscar Mayer in Beardstown when they opened their meat processing plant in 1967, serving as a supervisor until his retirement in 1987, upon the plant's sale to Cargill.

Jack maintained a variety of interests including hunting rabbits and deer, playing golf, and vacationing at Myrtle Beach, S.C. He enjoyed spending time with his family as his sons trained and fought matches across the country with the Golden Gloves Boxing program. An avid motorcyclist, he also enjoyed extended family trips aboard their motorcycles. His favorite companion and sidekick was Samantha, his golden retriever, who owned her own car which Jack was allowed to drive.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the American Cancer Society. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home and Crematory of Virginia is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.buchanancody.com.

We don't get the newspaper; my dad had seen it and just thought to mention it. We are so sorry to hear about Jack's passing! I will always remember our visits with you with Grandma Carson, especially the time Jack gave me my first and only motorcycle ride up and down the hills of Petersburg! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and with the rest of the family.
