Jacksonville - Janet Staples, 87, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, September 18, 2025, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born November 28, 1937, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Maurice and Alma Flynn Walsh. She married Robert W. Staples on September 2, 1957, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Murrayville, and he preceded her in death on July 8, 2017.
Mrs. Staples is survived by four sons, Michael Staples of Port Charlotte, Florida, Patrick (Terri) Staples and John Staples, both of Jacksonville, and Edward Staples of Springboro, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, Katelyn, Haley, Jessica, Samantha, Jacob, Danielle, Andrea, Wesley, Skylar, Kyra, Bailey, Jack, Charlie, and Elizabeth; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Rosemary Day, Pauline Newport, Martha "Mickey" Beadles, Marjorie Verry, and Frances Lovekamp.
Janet graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Springfield. She worked at First National Bank in Jacksonville and later owned and operated Frost Clothing in Winchester for many years. She eventually retired from the State of Illinois Central Management Services. She spent several years as a member of the Winchester school board and was an avid Cubs fan. Janet was a member of Church of Our Saviour and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. She had a strong faith and devotion to her Lord, a special relationship with Saint Therese. She cherished her many longtime friendships and their "scratch-off" days. More than anything, Janet was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Church of Our Saviour with burial at St. Bartholomew Cemetery. A prayer service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Williamson Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Our Saviour Grade School.
