My deepest condolences to Lauren's family. I started corresponding with Lauren in the late 1970s regarding the conservation of the Houston Toad and, later, the Illinois Mud Turtle. Lauren was passionate in his concerns, supplying data and opinions on conservation approaches and options. We continued correspondence sporadically until rather recently, particularly regarding fossil tortoises and their adaptations to cold climates. Lauren was one of the good guys, and I have included him in the dedication to my forthcoming book on frogs. His family has much to be proud of. The odd thing - I never met Lauren in person! Just correspondence and by phone (he hated the digital world, did not use email, and wrote letters and manuscripts in long hand). He will be remembered for his commitment to amphibians, reptiles and biodiversity in general.

Evan (and family)--I was saddened to read of your father's passing. For many years we walked to and swam at the McCormick pool. I enjoyed his company.
He had quite a research record and worked up until (nearly) the end. You can be most proud of him.
My thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with you.
Cordially,
Wib Leonard
