Nancy Jean van den Honert
Waterford, PA - Nancy Jean Sherwin van den Honert, age 75, of Waterford, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, in Erie, Pennsylvania, with her husband of nearly 52 years at her side. Born in Jacksonville, Illinois on April 4, 1950, to the late John L. and Marjorie Spencer Sherwin of Patterson Township, Nancy grew up on the family farm with two siblings, Marilyn Kay Sherwin and John Neal Sherwin, and they survive.
Nancy graduated from North Greene High School, White Hall, Il. in 1968. She earned a BS in Music Education in 1972 and a MS in Music Education in 1973, both from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. It was there that she met Peter van den Honert of Pittsfield, Ma., who was also in the Graduate School of Music. They married on August 11, 1973. She taught elementary vocal music and band for nearly 40 years in Illinois, Kansas, and Pennsylvania. For many summers, she and her husband worked at a boys' camp in Maine. She assumed several roles over the years, including baker, head chef, and co-head of the Archery Department.
In addition to her husband, sister and brother, she is survived by cousins, sisters-in law, brothers-in law, and their families.
Nancy was active in her church, First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Erie, PA.
A Memorial Service was held there followed by private interment at Pine Tree Cemetery, Patterson, Illinois.
