Phyllis Mullens Obituary

Phyllis L. Mullens, 75, of Jacksonville, passed away Friday morning, July 23, 2010, at Passavant Area Hospital.
She was born June 15, 1935, in Quincy, the daughter of Gilbert and Bertha Bourn Kriner. She married Fred Lee on Aug. 11, 1957, and they divorced in 1974. She later married John H. Mullens Sr. on Jan. 7, 1978, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, and he survives.
She is also survived by the following children, Gregory (wife, Connie) Lee, Valerie (husband, Terry) Shirkey, John H. (wife, Patti) Mullens Jr., and Marlena Nobody, all of Jacksonville, and James (wife, Eleanor) Mullens of Fort Drum, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, Heather Noe (fiancé, Randy Birdsell), Ashley (husband, Josh) Hulsey, Amanda Mullens, Marlene (husband, Dan) Aumiller, Justin (wife, Michelle) Mullens, Jeremy Hobbs, Geoffrey Mullens, Joshua Hobbs (fiancée, Kim), Kirsten Mullens, Anderson Mullens, Autumn Shirkey, Michelle (husband, Mark) Daly, Crystal Lee (fiancé, Corey) and Marsali Mullens; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Carpenter; and one brother in infancy.
Mrs. Mullens was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church in Quincy. She graduated from Quincy High School in 1952. She attended Western Illinois University and graduated from the School of Medical Technology in Columbus, Ohio. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. She was employed at Blessing Hospital in Quincy for 11 years where she taught Medical Technology. In 1966, she moved to Jacksonville to accept the position as Administrative Coordinator of Laboratory Services at Passavant Area Hospital and retired Sept. 15, 2000, after 34 years of service in the same position. She was one of the founding members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She was very active in the church, having done all the scheduling for the different committees of the church for 25 years and serving for 12 years as the secretary of the congregation. She also served as one of the Greeters. She was a member of the Willing Workers at the church, being responsible for helping with dinners for funerals, potluck dinners and dinners for the area Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Pastors when they held meetings at the church. She was one of the technicians who ran the sound system for the church's Sunday morning radio broadcasts for 30 years. She loved her family very much and enjoyed playing with her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren but her most favorite thing to do was to fix holiday dinners for the entire family. She was an avid reader and enjoyed counted-cross stitch. She will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday at Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.

Dear John, Greg and Val. I am deeply saddened by the news of Phyllis' death. I remember her from her days at Passavant's lab and visiting her in South Jacksonville and at Vale Vue Acres. She had such a great personality and cheerful manor. I hope the fond memories of her fill your hearts with great joy. Tom & Tammy Rust
