Robert Chipman Obituary

Robert E. Chipman
Jacksonville - Generosity. Compassion. Gratitude. Contentment.
These were the tenets Bob Chipman lived by, and the tenets he raised up and deepened for all of those around him.
Robert E. Chipman, 72, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Springfield Memorial Hospital.
Bob was born June 27, 1952 in Jacksonville, the son of William E. and Alice Acker Chipman and the beloved grandson of Ed and Alma Chipman and Earl and Mamie Acker of Rushville. He graduated from Jacksonville High School, where he was very involved in band and numerous sports while also employed in the city parks department. As a student at Illinois College, he met his life partner, Janet Williams Chipman at a Triopia High School football game where she cheered. Their love was solidified as IC students, and Bob and Janet were married on June 16, 1973 at First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. Throughout college, in addition to numerous leadership roles on campus, Bob worked in the Myers Brothers and JCPenney mens' departments. Bob graduated from Illinois College in 1974 with a BA in History and Government and became an administrative assistant to the mayor of Jacksonville.
Later, as a loan officer at the Farmers State Bank, Bob made all who entered the bank feel welcome with his quick, wide smile and his warm words. In 1987, he joined his father Bill Chipman's business in real estate and appraisal at their office on West State Street, bringing his keen mind, his optimism, and his care for his work. Over the next nearly 40 years, Bob helped countless families find their just right homes, celebrate new beginnings, and navigate farewells. He treated every single person with dignity, respect, and earnestness all while sporting his signature bow ties. He had an innate, remarkable ability to raise the spirits of anyone he encountered.
A hometown boy, Bob carried Jacksonville in his heart and in his bones. He sought out every opportunity to support and uplift this community with integrity, humble leadership, and unfailing kindness. He has served as the president of the local YMCA Board, the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Passavant Area Hospital Board. He has three times served as the president of the Association of Realtors and has twice served as United Way Campaign Chair as well as the President of the Prairieland United Way Board.
Bob was a member of the Illinois College Board of Trustees for 25 years, serving in many capacities, including Vice Chair of the Board. He retired from the Board of Trustees in 2023 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the college. After his retirement, he continued as a Trustee Emeritus, lending his expertise and support. In 2023, Bob was also inducted into the Jacksonville Hall of Fame. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and, along with Janet, was a youth advisor, taught children's classes, and, for the last 30 years, taught the ACTS Bible Class. Most recently, Bob was energized and excited about his work as Board President of the Jacksonville Public Schools Foundation and of the Jacksonville Area Museum Foundation. He was looking forward to the West State Street renovation and seeing the new arch and lights from his office window.
Bob woke at 5 am every morning to read his Bible, give thanks for the new day, and to pray for his family, his friends, those leading, striving, searching, and suffering, and for all of the communities he held in his heart. He found pleasure in traveling with his family: from the beaches of Michigan to the mountains of Switzerland, from the waters of the Caribbean to the streets of Japan. He was also a life-long fitness enthusiast who played basketball, coached youth teams, exercised at the Y at noon every day for years, and impressed his fellow yogis with his headstands. He read extensively, including A Christmas Carol every December, Julius Caesar every March, and a biography of every president--in order. But his greatest moments of joy were found laughing on the carpet with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "F," or walking hand-in-hand with Janet on the sidewalks of his beloved hometown.
Bob is survived by his wife Janet, his two sons and their families, Timothy (wife Stephanie) and granddaughter Ruth of Jacksonville, and Andrew (wife Alicia) and grandson Elder and granddaughters Etta and Edia of Chicago, his brother James (fiancee Sally Tamizuddin) of Springfield, his brother-in-law John Williams, his sister-in-law Mary Lee Williams, his seven nephews, and many "found" family members he has brought into his fold, including the over 30 international students he and Janet welcomed into their home, especially Phuong Nguyen.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 1:00 pm, at First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. For those unable to attend in person, youtube.com/firstpresjax/ will provide a livestream of the service. Following the service, at approximately 2:15 pm, the family will lead a memorial vehicle procession around downtown Jacksonville. Others are invited to join by car or by lining the sidewalks. Family will meet friends for a Celebratory Gathering at Cummings Dining Hall on the campus of Illinois College following the service until 5:30 p.m. Family gravesite rites will be held at a later date. Memorials are encouraged to the following institutions Bob spent his life serving: First Presbyterian Church, Illinois College, Jacksonville Area Museum Foundation, Jacksonville Public Schools Foundation, Prairieland United Way, and the YMCA-- instead of flowers. The Williamson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com

Just heard of Bob´s untimely death today. Though I left IC my junior year, I was in his 1970 class. I remember him fondly. Never was he not smiling, always warm and friendly, and the biggest cheerleader IC ever had. Our deepest condolences to his wife, his family and all who knew and loved him. This news hits hard. Our families go so far back to church ties and community. I am especially remembering the deep friendship that Bill Chipman and my father had. (Including tennis games at Don Kolmer's home.) Bob and I got to refresh our relationship when he sold our family home in 2009. On a visit to town, in probably 2019, I decided to head to the bowl for a basketball game. I came in at halftime and Bob spotted me walking the perimeter. I walked down to visit with him and Janet. He said he could hardly believe his eyes. I am so happy to have had these moments to embrace in remembering Bob. What a pure and wonderful spirit he is!

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked at the Morgan County Abstract company many years ago right out of college and Bob was my favorite customer. He was the kindest man I ever met. I was very sad to see he passed away and my thoughts and prayers are sure with all of you. He will be missed, but always remember you will be with him again someday. God Bless. When Lanette and I came to Jacksonville in 1998, Bob was one of the first people to extend a hand of friendship to us. As everyone knows, Bob was very active at IC, and as the new Chaplain, he and his son Tim were wonderful in helping me get a personal feel for both the students and the history of the college. I also look back fondly at the relationship that developed between his sons, Tim and Andrew, and my son, Lamar, who were students together at IC. Bob was a wonderful friend, and whenever we would run into each other at various activities in the community, he always greeted me with a smile, a hearty handshake, and complimented me on the work I was doing both in the community and at the college. I always appreciated that support. As a result, Lanette and I feel a terrible loss with his passing and send our deepest condolences to Janet and the family. May God grant you and yours His comfort and peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the honor of working alongside Bob several years ago during the merger of the Jacksonville Association of REALTORS® and the Capital Area Association of REALTORS®. He was an absolute pleasure to get to know and work with. I will never forget his generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the Jacksonville community. Bob's legacy will continue in the countless lives he touched. I hadn’t talked with Bob in several years but thought about him often. I’m not sure what prompted me, but earlier this year, on a whim, I called Bob, and we had a great time catching up. Gone way too soon. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Bob's death. My memory of Bob and his wife, Janet, goes back to the mid 1970's. The Chipmans were newlyweds and lived in an upstairs apartment next to my parents house on City Place. Bob owned a white Mustang at the time. I remember him washing and polishing that car. He also mowed a lot because the landlady would take $2 off his rent for every time he mowed :) Later the Chipmans lived just one block away on Pitner so we were always neighbors so to speak. I had the opportunity to speak with Bob several years ago regarding the sale of my mother's house where he graciously provided his professional opinion free of charge. Bob Chipman was a beautiful human in every way; a true christian. We should all take a page from his playbook. The world is a lesser place without him in it. My sincere condolences to the Chipman family.

Bob´s passing is the to an era seldom witnessed by most people. Bob and his family wished the best for all. And I do mean all. I never heard a bad word or thought from him.
You could tell that he was sharing his life with God. And God could not pick a better human being the him.
Always a BIG smile, a hand shake, and " how are you?" That was as real as his love for everyone.
I truly wish the Chipman family time to find the words, feelings that help appreciate all he was and the reverence he deserves.

My brother Steve was good friends with Bob and daughter was blessed to be a close friend of Tim. So hard to give Bob to God but if anyone deserves the highest seat on God´s council it is him.
Chipman family, we fall to our knees and thank the universe because he made it the best it could be.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Dear Janet, Andrew and Tim, we are very sad to hear about your terrible loss.
When we met Robert almost 20 years ago in Germany we were deeply impressed by his politeness and kindness. Later we were always glad to see him on Andrew`s pictures surrounded by his grandchildren enjoying their time together. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

How can I begin to describe the sorrow I feel for Janet, Tim, Andrew, and all the members of the Chipman family in regards to their beloved patriarch. There aren´t many people who possess the personality and the qualities that every single person immediately enjoyed when they came face-to-face with this gentleman-Bob Chipman.

When I first met Bob was when I was a freshman in high school and Bob was a junior. Even then, Bob was always so very friendly, courteous, and polite. His pleasant interaction and warm smile made you feel good about yourself which always helped you have a better day! In high school, Bob played football with numerous others including my husband, Roger. Bob and I would often speak of how Roger would have loved and spoiled our twin grandchildren. Bob was always such a sensitive and caring friend that very often, both of us would get tears during these conversations and would give one another a gentle hug. I am including a picture of Bob and Dave Deweese that was taken by Janet Deweese on February 7, 2015 at the JHS Bowl at an Alumni basketball game in which Bob participated. Every time I ran into Bob, I was always so happy to see him because he was such an enjoyable person to be around.

In these later years, each time our paths would cross, he was that exact same way-happy to see you, and would always inquire about what was going on in your life that would truly give you an inside glow! As a wonderful result, your own big smile matched the one he gave you! Aside from Bob Chipman, I don´t believe there are many people in this world today who have this same contagious effect on every single person they meet. This could best describe a day in the life of Bob Chipman-all day long and each and every day-with each and every person! Rest in Peace, my dear friend.

Bob Chipman never saw a stranger, and could make a life-long friend out of someone he met only five minutes before! Bob brought such kindness, respect, and compassion to those individuals he worked with in organizations, committees, and groups. In many ways, our community has lost a "Gentle Giant," a "Noble Gentleman," and a "Fantastic Friend." I sincerely believe Bob was a model human being that many of us could strive to emulate... this "Friend-to-Everyone" we knew as "Bob Chipman!"

I would cross paths with Bob at the YMCA, and out in the community, from time to time. He always had time to say "hello", without really knowing much about me. I also got to know his son, Tim, at Illinois College. Tim reminded me of his father. Friendly, outgoing, compassionate, and, giving. Thoughts and prayers to all family and friends. Bob will be missed!

Janet , Tim , and Andrew , Bob was an amazing human being. It was such a blessing for my family to know and love him . He was the ultimate gentleman. Kindness and goodness exploded in him. Tim, Janet, Andrew and families, I am so sorry for your loss! I´ve gotten to know Bob and Janet since moving here when Anthony and Tim were in 8th grade. Their friendship was unique and I loved to harass Tim just as much as he did me. Because of our harassment Bob and Janet became known to me as "Bandboy Parents." That always made Bob laugh and warmed my heart even after all these years! Little did Bob or Janet know that on more than one occasion I called them that because I couldn´t think of their real names! I´ll always think fondly of Bob because of these memories!!! Sending hugs and prayers to all!

Tim, Andrew and Janet, I have been thinking of you in this great loss of such a strong pillar in your family and also in the Jacksonville community. When I think of Bob, I think of warmth, love and kindness that he showed to all. It wasn´t often that I didn´t head down College Avenue without seeing Bob and Janet walking hand in hand truly enjoying each other´s company. And to know your sons is to guarantee your legacy will live in them and will be shared with so many for years to come. I´m so happy to have fond childhood memories with the Chipmans and just know I´m praying for you in this difficult time. Lots of love.

Mr. Chipman was my first basketball coach (Chipman Realtors) and Cub Scout leader (Den 1) in the late 80's. Being friends with his son Andrew luckily allowed for Bob to be in my life throughout the 90's, often involving him sharing his love for sports with us. Bob's own parents Bill and Alice were always so incredibly fun and kind to me and my family, that there was never a question as to how he must have first developed his signature swagger that won so many over. He had a wonderful sense of humor around us kids, and could likewise get very serious in a huddle with the game on the line. He is one of Jacksonville's all-time gems for how he went about doing all that he has done for it, and will be remembered as such, and much more, forever, through his loving family and everyone that ever knew him.

Shirley and I did not know Janet and Bob on a personal level; however, living in Jacksonville for decades we sensed the tremendous impact the Chipmans had on this community. Bob's spirit is one that definitely needs to be emulated by everyone wanting to exhibit and demonstrate goodness toward their fellow man. Such a role model and giving individual! Our son was in the same graduating class at JHS as Tim so we knew him from that connection. Our lives are better because of the Chipmans. Bob is the kind of person who makes Jacksonville better. Bob's smile is now so big and bright, human eyes couldn't behold it! He has been told "Very Well done my good and faithful servant". As he enjoys eternal life, we are blessed with the memories of the wonderful works he did while among us. Blessed are they who mourn for they SHALL be comforted. As I told Bob at his Dad's funeral, we mourn because we love. As Christians, because we love we rejoyce knowing Bob is happily with our Father eternally. Bob and I went to JHS together as did both of our sons. It was such an honor to serve with him at 1st. Pres. Janet, Andrew, Tim - may you take comfort knowing you're in the prayers of hundreds of us.

I did not know Bob on a really personal level but can testify of his love & kindness whenever I was around him. His smile and kind words would always lift me up. My husband knew him on a more personal level and when he would workout at the YMCA whenever Bob came into the room, he would make sure and speak to every single person, either with a kind word or just a smile! THAT is what Jesus taught His disciples to do! Bob was a disciple of Christ in the most real way- just being in the same room as him I could feel his Christ- like spirit! He will be missed by so many. Praying for his wife and son and all who love him, which I'm sure are so many. Prayers for peace.

I got to meet you two times...as you walked out of your real estate building..I'm assuming it was a break...you looked over and saw all of us children lifting food out of a van for my grandmother's HELPS Ministry Outreach. You came over to tell us how great of a job we are doing and to keep up the great work. You let us know that you was extremely proud of us from doing all that hard work. The second time I ran into you was when I was exercising heading to the YMCA and I saw you and Janet walking together she was excited to see me because she was my teacher, and we talked about your son being my sister's teacher and all of the things that he did for us after we moved to Jacksonville to make us feel welcome, like creating the LJ Stars. I did not know you personally but I got to know your wife and your son very well, as they were both my teachers. I pray many blessings over your whole entire family. I pray for peace and comfort. I want to thank you for everything you have done. I can tell you was an amazing father and husband in any title that you had. So although I didn't really know you personally, I got the pleasure of knowing your son that has touched so many lives, even my sons.

Janet, Tim and family - I´m so sorry to see this news. Mr. Chipman (and your whole family) had such a way of brightening any room with his kind heart. It was always such a pleasure seeing you in the coffee shop. While I´m saddened for all of you at his passing, I´m honored to have known him even in a small way. Looking back on memories of chatting with him are filled with cheerfulness and smiles. What a beautiful life he lived. Thank you, Mr. Chipman, for being a cheerful guiding light in the world.
Sending my love to all of you.

Bob was the best of us, an example for all to follow. He was gracious to all, kind, and thoughtful. He was brilliant, yet humble. He encouraged those around him. He was a mensch - the most wonderful of people. He will be greatly missed. Lauren and I offer our condolences and prayers for the family. Baruch Dayan Emes! Zichrono livracha, Bob's memory is for blessing.

My uncle Bob was a great man. He ran the real estate company, that my grandfather set up, and did a great job holding onto the legacy! He was a member of many volunteer organizations also, which is what I admire of him.
He also was a family man. He loved all of his grandchildren and children, traveling to them frequently.
I will miss Uncle Bob.
