Ronald Tendick Obituary

Ronald L. "Ron" Tendick, 73, of Jacksonville - a dedicated, humble and honest servant of God - went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born April 18, 1942, in Jacksonville, the son of Lee O. and Marjorie I. DeLong Tendick. He married Rosemary Dawson on June 30, 1967, in Jacksonville and she survives.

Left here to celebrate his life on earth and his patience, kindness, compassion and sense of humor are the love of his life, Rosemary; his daughter, Lana Keen (husband, Joe) of Jacksonville; his son, Lane Tendick (wife, Rachel) of Jacksonville; his grandchildren, Levi Rogers and Katie Purdue, both of Jacksonville, and Pvt. James Purdue stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Doris Kennedy.

A 1960 graduate of Jacksonville High School, Ron attended Illinois College, which presented him in 2004 with an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree. Music was an important part of Ron's life since his time in the JHS band. Following high school, he played with three bands, including The Dynamics, The Clarke Brothers and The Sound Organization, where he became known as "Rockin Ron".

From 1969 to 1985, Ron served as news and sports director at WLDS/WEAI radio, where he became well-known for covering everything from the city council to broadcasting high school sports in west-central Illinois, often with his longtime friend and fellow broadcaster, Jerry Symons.

He later joined Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, serving as its community relations director from 1985 to 1989. He was elected a Jacksonville Fifth Ward alderman in 1987 and left the hospital after his successful election as mayor in 1989. He was a five-term mayor for Jacksonville, serving 20 years until his retirement in 2009.

A devoted community servant, Ron served on the boards of Prairieland United Way, Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Municipal League and Illinois News Broadcasters. He was a founding member and past chairman of the Jacksonville Regional Economic Development Corporation. He was a past chairman of the Passavant Area Hospital board of directors and a past president and member of the Jacksonville Rotary Club. He was currently serving as a member and vice chairman of Network Knowledge (Public Television), committee chairman for the Passavant Hospital Foundation, and vice president of the Jacksonville Area Visitors and Convention Bureau.

He was a devoted member of Westfair Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for young people and later for adult classes until his health prevented him from continuing. He was an integral part of the church's music ministry, singing in the choir, playing his guitar and providing vocal solos. His love and interest in young people carried through his role as mayor, and he often was seen communicating with children at schools, camps and public events.

In his spare time, Ron enjoyed restoring antique cars, working in his flower beds, researching genealogy, studying history, drinking coffee at the Elks Club and playing Farkle and relaxing with his family.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial gifts are suggested to Westfair Baptist Church, the Passavant Hospital Foundation or the Jacksonville Rotary Foundation. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.buchanancody.com.

Rosemary and family,
It is with great sadness in my heart to hear of Ron's passing....It was a tremendous honor and privilege to know him. When my brother, Gary Hickey, was killed in a car accident, Gary was working for WLDS-WEAI and Ron was a special friend to my brother. Ron then became a truly wonderful friend to my family and me. His kindness was so memorable as well as Jerry Symons' kindness, that they both became lifelong friends of our family. There is no way that we can ever say thank you enough to Ron, except to tell the world what they already know: Ron was a wonderful and outstanding man whom God truly used on a daily basis. God bless you all and as you know, he will be and is deeply missed.
With love and prayers,
Wanda Hoffman (Hickey)

Very sorry to learn of Ron's death. Ron and I shared a passion--and stories--of mid-19th century Jacksonville. His interest in John J. Hardin helped me understand the early citizens of our hometown for my book about Hardin's friend Stephen A. Douglas. Prayers for Ron's soul and condolences to his many friends and loved ones.

Rosemary & Family....Marilyn and I send our thoughts and prayers as we hear of Ron's death. We are "out of town" and will miss the funeral but I'm sure you know our friendship goes back to many fond memories of Ron. I will always remember Ron's conversation with me after our daughter was killed on July 4th in South Jacksonville. As News Director to came to our house that tragic night to report the "news." He said he pulled into the driveway and couldn't come to the door. That night he was more than a "News Director." He was a man with a tremendous amount of personal feelings and I'm a better person to have had Ron as a friend.
God Bless,

Ron Tendick was a 'Primce, ' and the epitome of a gentleman.
I had many opportunities to visit with Ron during my 21-year tenure as JHS boys' basketball coach.

Ron stepped forward to assist me in establishing the Annual Rotary sponsored 'West Central Illinois Student-Athlete recognition banquet.'

As I began doing my Saturday morning 'Sports Spotlight Program' on WLDS, it was Ron who took me under his wings to tutor the Coach.

My wife, Gerry and I extend our sincere sympathy to Ron's wife, Rosemary and and their entire family. I will cherish the great memories shared with Ron Tendick.

The Passavant family extends sympathy to Rosemary and the entire Tendick family. Ron was admired for his wise counsel, and he was a valued leader here at Passavant Area Hospital. He cared deeply about our hospital and its role in the community. He leaves a great legacy of community service.
