Virgle Hamm Obituary

Virgle L. Hamm, 63, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Carthage Health and Rehab Center, following an 18-month illness.

Virgle was born Nov. 21, 1947, in Concord. He was raised and educated in Jacksonville, Ill., before coming to Joplin in 1974. Virgle was employed with Tamko Roofing Co. for 36 years, retiring in June of this year. Virgle was an Army veteran, serving as a NATO Guard in Fulda, Germany. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Virgle married Karen A. Goodwin on May 9, 1970, in Carterville, Mo., and she survives. Additional survivors include one son, David Hamm and wife Racheal of Carl Junction, Mo.; two daughters, Misty Calhoun and husband Michael of Aurora, Mo., and Traci McGinnis and husband Adam of Centerton, Ark.; three brothers, Bill Hamm and wife Sharon of Joplin, Mo., and Charlie Hamm and wife Rosie and Frank Hamm and wife Sandy, both of Jacksonville, Ill.; three sisters, Doris Gains of Jacksonville, Fla., Mary Catherine Antle of Jacksonville, Ill., and Tina Dunn and husband Gene of Nilwood; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, LeAnne Lynette Hamm; three brothers, Ed, Johnny and Dale Hamm; and three sisters, Betty Van Hyning, Barbara Hamm and Lois Ann Clayton.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel in Joplin, Mo., with the Rev. Roger Flint officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Hamm, Michael Calhoun, Adam McGinnis, Andy Chism, Dick Flint and Phillip Law. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Memorial contributions are requested to Hospice Compassus or Freeman Cancer Institute in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.

Hey Uncle Virgle,
I kno you will have lots of Elvis parties in Heaven. We will all miss you, at least we all have memories of you and Uncle Frank actin silly! You were always a fun person to be around and even though you are gone you will always be with me. I kno i didnt get to see you in July, but I was thinkin of you and the family. I love you with all my heart and this is me saying goodbye for now, I kno I will see you again.

My Father was such a great man, He new just how to make a person smile. He fought such a long fight with cancer, he will no longer be in pain. We will all truely miss this wounderful man.... Love you Daddy, Traci& Adam and the kids.
