He taught at KHS for 32 years, retiring in 2001. Jack also served as an adjunct professor at Keene State College for over a decade. Jack became a well-published author of poetry, short stories, and a novel titled "The Acolyte". His publications include two poetry collections --'Seasons and Shadows' and 'Not Far From Here'-- and a collection of short fiction 'How Far Away, How Near'. His poem "My Father in Winter" was awarded the Robert Penn Warren Free Verse prize by The Anthology of New England Writers. Jack is survived by his wife Patricia (Hobbs) Hitchner and her daughters Kerri and her husband Joseph Immergut, Kristi and her husband Daniel Doman, and Amy and her husband Nick Roy; and son John R Hitchner, from Jack's first marriage to Nancy (Bettinger) Hitchner, and John's wife Suzan; grandchildren Isabel and Jacob Hitchner, Kira and Nora Doman, and Claire Janvier. Mr. Hitchner was my 7th grade English teacher at Franklin High School. It was he who inspired me to become a teacher as well. He was the BEST teacher that I was fortunate enough to know. Middle school years are tough but his guidance and warmth was received by many and made those years great.
My sincerest condolences for you and your family.

My name is Josephine Madden (Italia) before I was married. Mr. Hitchner was my 7th grade English teacher. He had an incredible inpact on my life. I became an education major and later a 7th grade teacher due to his influence on my early educational years. I was never able to thank him for his guidance. I wish I hadn't waited this long.

Please accept my sincerest condolences. I only hope that he did not suffer for long. He was a wonderful teacher and a great role model.

Again, my sincerest condolences to his family.

Sincerely,
Josephine P.(Italia) Madden
