Carl Williams Obituary
A lifelong West Texan, he was known for his deep love of music, mathematics, and the open skies of Hale County.
Born in Hale Center, Carl graduated from Plainview High School in 1965 and earned his music education degree from West Texas State University. He served in the U.S. Army with the 62nd Band at Fort Bliss and later taught band before returning to his family's surveying legacy. In 1980, he became the third generation in his family to serve as Hale County Surveyor, a position he held with distinction for over 40 years before retiring in 2023.
A multi-instrumentalist, Carl especially loved the oboe, saxophone, and piano, performing with the Plainview Symphony Orchestra and local churches. He was active in civic life through the Lions Club, Unger Memorial Library, and multiple genealogical and historical societies.
He is survived by his children Mark (Keri) Williams of Brownfield and Mary (Lynn) Steen of Plano; grandchildren Bethany "West", Katie, Holly, John, Michael, and William; his sister Lucia (Ferman) McBeth; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Renee, his parents Carl and Gertrude Williams, his sister Margaret Louthan, and brother John Mark Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the WT Music Department, High Plains Genealogical Society, or the PHS Class of '65.
