Sally Osborn Whatley

1937 - 2026

Sally Osborn Whatley, 88, of Austin, passed peacefully surrounded by family on January 7, 2026. Family and friends are invited to services on January 24, 2026, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church Friona, 404 W. 5th St., Friona, Texas. Burial following in the Friona Cemetery entrusted to HANSARD FAMILY Funeral Home of Friona.

Sally was born on October 3, 1937, in Hereford to Sloan and Ilene Osborn. Sally grew up in Friona where she was the drum major for the high school band. She was voted Football Queen in 1953 and Queen of the Parmer County Fat Stock Show in 1955. Sally graduated from Friona High School in 1956. Sally attended Mary Baldwin College for two years before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with a B.A. in History. While at University of Texas, she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority.

At UT, Sally met her husband, Douglas C. Whatley. They married in 1961. Sally and Doug settled in Plainview, Texas, where they raised their family. Sally enjoyed cooking and was known for her homemade bread. She taught third grade Sunday school at First Baptist Church Plainview for over ten years. In 1988, she and Doug moved to Amarillo, where she lived before moving to Austin in 2020. Sally loved crafting, including quilting and wool hooking with many good friends over the years. We will miss her very much.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Sloan and Ilene Osborn of Friona, her brothers Robbie Osborn of Friona and Charles Osborn of Amarillo, and her husband of over 50 years, Douglas C. Whatley. Survivors are her children, David Whatley and his wife Elizabeth and their children Janemarie, Billy, John, and Sallie of Austin, Texas and Sarah of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Holly Whatley and her spouse Stephanie Vassallo of Los Angeles and their children Samuel of Socorro, New Mexico and Joseph of Berlin, Germany; and her brother Joe Osborn of Austin, Texas.
