Samuel Young Obituary

Samuel Jackson Young LUBBOCK - Funeral services for Samuel Jackson "S.J." Young Jr., 86, of Lubbock will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Richard Rush officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home of Lubbock. Visitation will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. today at Sanders Funeral Home. Mr. Young died Monday, May 3, 2010, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Plainview to Samuel Jackson and Maude Baughman Young. On July 6, 1941, he married the love of his life, Opal Briggs. They were married 65 years. S.J. farmed in Plainview. He was treasurer of Happy Union Baptist Church and a member of the Plainview Lions Club. S.J. served as a greeter and was an active and faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for 20 years. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Ann Nelson and husband, Mike of Lubbock; and son-in-law, Tom Waldrep of Lubbock. Affectionately known as "Papa," S.J. had three grandchildren, Jay Nelson and wife, Robyn, of Fort Worth, Amy Everett and husband, Brad, of Little Elm and Leigh Montgomery and husband, Rik, of Frisco. S.J. was a proud great-grandfather of four boys, Rily, Ryder, Ryan and Caleb. S.J. was preceded in death by his wife, Opal; daughter, Sandra Waldrep; three sisters; and two brothers. Memorials may be sent to Calvary Baptist Church of Lubbock or to Meals on Wheels of Lubbock. Online condolences may be made at www.sandersfuneralhome.com.
