Ted Garrett Culp

1967 - 2024

Ted Garrett Culp was born May 16, 1967, in Plainview, Texas, to Joel Culp and Patsy Lemons Culp. He grew up in Plainview and graduated from Plainview High School in 1985. While growing up, he enjoyed spending summer vacations water skiing at Lake Conchas, New Mexico, riding motorcycles, and playing music.

By age ten, Ted had a desire for music. He began playing drums in the sixth-grade band, but his instrument of choice was the guitar. He liked playing classic and progressive rock. Some of his early favorite artists were AC/DC, Aerosmith, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, and Rush. He excelled on the guitar, both as a rhythm and lead player. In 8th grade, his guitar skills landed him his first gig with the band The Systam. Throughout high school, he continued to play drums in the school band and guitar in the jazz band while playing in other garage bands.

After graduating high school, he moved to Levelland, Texas, and enrolled in the music programs at South Plains College (SPC). He then moved to Lubbock, Texas, and co-founded the band Tribal Soul. The group recorded school projects at SPC and a three-song professional demo at Don Caldwell Studios. After the group disbanded, he played in various bands, including the popular Los Tornados. While in Lubbock, he pursued his other passion, cooking, and worked in various restaurants. His love for cooking led him to open his restaurant in Plainview, The Spaghetti Ranch.

In 1998, Ted decided to move to Bozeman, Montana. There, he continued to cook and play music. He joined the band The Booze Hounds, playing hard-edged blues and country rock. The band released their first album, "Beer," in 2004 and their sophomore album, "Happy Hour," in 2005. They played hundreds of gigs touring throughout Montana and the Pacific Northwest before he left the band. He moved to Missoula, where he attended the University of Montana and worked on a degree in social work and addiction counseling; he also volunteered for the Open Aid Alliance. He then moved back to Bozeman before returning to Texas.

In 2020, Ted returned to West Texas, living in Plainview and Lubbock. He continued working in the food service industry and occasionally played music with friends. He passed away on August 20, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. His brother, Dutch Culp, and father, Joel Culp, preceded him in death. He is survived by his mother, Patsy Lemons Culp, sons Steven and Crosby Culp, and many friends. There will not be a public funeral or interment. His wishes were for his friends and family to gather and play or listen to music while sharing stories about the good times they had. His ashes will be spread in Montana during a private ceremony.
