Barbara Slayton Hicks

Barbara Slayton Hicks, age 74, passed away March 11th at her home. She was born in Danville, Virginia on September 12, 1941 to Russell and Julia Barbour Slayton. Barbara graduated from Groveton High School, in Alexandria, VA in 1959 and then attended Radford University and the University of North Carolina, graduating with a degree in nursing.
Barbara was an RN for many years and was board certified in nephrology. She worked at Duke University Medical Center, Charleston, WV Area Medical Center and Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She retired from nursing in 1988. After retirement, she went into real estate in Columbia, SC, where she worked as a broker/agent for Russell-Jeffcoat Realtors, Remax and The Mungo Company. She retired in 2004 and moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC where she resided until her death, with her long time best friend and husband of 55 years, Michael. Barbara was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Michael; two daughters, Tracy Strader of Pheonix, AZ and Meredith Kivi of Longs, SC; a grandson, Zachary Strader; a granddaughter, Peyton Kivi; and a brother, Russell Slayton of Lawrenceville, VA. She is pre-deceased by her parents; a son, Timothy Russell; and a granddaughter, Emma Danielle Strader.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 14th at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She will be buried beside her granddaughter, Danielle, at Woodridge Memorial Park in Lexington, SC on Tuesday, March 15th at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Mercy Care Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401, www.hospiceandlifecarecenter.org; or Humane Society of N. Mike, I have many nice memories of the family reunions in N.C. on the farm. Please know that Virenda and I will always keep you and your family in our prayers. Your wife was a very special lady. You and your family have our deepest sympathy.
