Donald Charlson Obituary

Donald (Don) Gary Charlson, age 78, of Surfside Beach, SC, passed away on September 21, 2024, after a short illness. Don was born in Fargo, North Dakota, to the late Donald Gearhardt Charlson and the late Irene Y. Christianson Charlson.

He graduated from George C. Marshall High School in Ankara, Turkey, and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration, in 1970 from Southern New Hampshire University. He was a proud Army veteran, serving his country during multiple deployments in Korea and Vietnam. Don dedicated his career to protecting his country. He served as an Alexandria, VA Police Officer before serving as a Senior Special Agent with the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service in the Washington Field Office. He retired in July 2003.

In retirement, Don embraced his passion for genealogy, delving into the stories of his ancestors and preserving his family's Swedish and Norwegian history. He loved walking the beach and spending time with his family. He and his beloved wife, Donna, cherished their road trips together, exploring national parks and museums, and visiting loved ones.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Donna; his sons, Donald (Cindy) Charlson of Scarborough, ME, and David Charlson of Litchfield, ME; his step-sons, Robert Tabit of Gaithersburg, MD, Shane (Vanessa) Tabit of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Randy Tabit of Surfside Beach, SC; and his cherished grandchildren: Brandon, Fiona, Tyr, Liam, Spencer, Trevor, Dylan, Luke, and Ethan. He is also survived by his brothers, William (Sally) Charlson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and TJ Charlson of St. Paul, MN. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Lee Charlson.

Don will be remembered as a kind, generous, and intelligent man who lived a life of service, dedication, and love.

A celebration of Don's life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Don's memory by spending time with your loved ones, exploring the world, or delving into your own family history.

Don and I were brother in law´s but it felt more like we were brothers. We shared many times filled with laughter, especially about our kooky adorable wife´s. He made into a " marble game board" freak. We shared a love for that game and spent a many hours playing. We shared a passion for reading and shared many books. He was a brilliant person and I especially enjoyed discussing books with him. We always enjoyed grilling our wife´s a special ribeye on his Weber whenever we visited. They were always great hosts for a visit to the beach and always welcoming. You are already missed my brother!! Love Darry
