Edward Shaw Obituary

Nov. 2, 1919 - Dec. 31, 2006

MYRTLE BEACH | Edward David Shaw, 87, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

He was born November 2, 1919, in New York City, the son of the late David Edward and Marion Auerbach Shaw. He was married to Margaret Hunter Shaw for 51 years who predeceased him.

Mr. Shaw was educated in New York City Schools and Lafayette College, Pa. He became interested in flying and got his license in his teens. He owned several planes and sold the last one in September 2006.

He joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program, understanding he would be trained as a pilot and go on to active duty if called. The call came to the Air Force early in 1942, after Pearl Harbor. He trained as a glider pilot in Lubbock, Texas and served in the U.S., England, France, Holland, Germany and Belgium. After the war he returned to civilian life, but remained in the Active Air Force Reserve at a unit in West Chester County, New York.

In civilian life he began an extensive career in plastics, first joining his father at Velveray Corp. of America. Then as president of Comet Packaging, which merged with Martin Brower Corp. This company was purchased by Clorox Corp.

He retired from the Reserves in 1970 as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S Air Force Reserve and moved to Myrtle Beach in 1971. He was founder and advisor to Waccamaw Properties from 1975 to 1981 and founder and general manager of Warehouse Specialty Co from 1975 to 1985.

He was also a volunteer for the Humane Society. Planes and flying and dogs have always been his passion. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be truly missed by his family.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Sharp Shaw, who he married in 1998; one daughter, Peggy Hardee and husband, Gwynn, of Loris; two sons, David Lawrence Shaw of Las Vegas, Nev. and Alan Hunter Shaw of Castroville, Calif.; one sister, Carol Mann of Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Courtney Anne Hagreen and Christine Marie Shaw.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C. at 3 p.m.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

My dad was a fellow glider pilot and talked often about Ed. Mom moved in with us when he passed and we lost her in March. However, we talked about many good memories mom had, too. As an animal rescue person, I admire his work with the local Humane Society, and I know he will be missed. Our deepest sympathy--
