Gabriel Nahmias Obituary

Gabriel "Gabe" Nahmias
February 13, 1915-February 20, 2011
Myrtle Beach, SC
Gabriel Nahmias, 96, of Sunrise, FL and Myrtle Beach, SC died on Sunday, February 20, 2011. He was born in Rochester, New York on February 13, 1915 and lived there until 1950, when he moved to Florida. Gabe began his career in the carnival business and in 1957 became the manager and eventual owner of Jones Bingo in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He and his wife operated the successful bingo until they retired in the late 70's. In 1979, he developed the Colonial 66 Townhomes in Myrtle Beach.
Gabe split his time between South Carolina and Florida, where he lived in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas. He was a long time member of the Miami Showmen's Association. As a young man, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys. He was a talented pool player, and loved spending his afternoons shooting pool. He also enjoyed playing chess and cheering for his favorite sports teams, the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Heat. Gabe was a loving husband, brother, uncle and friend. He touched many lives with his kindness, generosity and eternal optimism. He will be truly missed.
Gabe was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Angelina Nahmias; his parents, Luna and Abraham Nahmias; stepmother, Allegra Nahmias; brothers: Danny Newman, David Nahmias, Sol Newman and Jake Nahmias; and sister Mary Palermo. He is survived by his sisters Lea Saporta and Betty Hecker of Rochester, NY and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Thursday, February 24th at 11 am at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, 910 67th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, with Rabbi Avi Perets officiating. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 am at the funeral home prior to the service. Not sure what to say?

Gabe was a special relative of mine. He was always upbeat, and charming, and had lots of things to say. Never bitter, never of sharp-tongue. He was the kind of man you enjoyed being around. I was very glad he got to meet my wife when I was newly-wed.

I had the pleasure of being the first owner of Unit #8 at the Colonial 66 Townhomes that Ann and Gabe built. They were a wonderful couple who treated everyone that moved into the townhomes like family. They were extremely generous and shared many joys with all the new homeowners. I hope you all find comfort in the many memories that you have of this sweet couple and please accept my sincere condolences.

Gabe and Ann were very good friends with my grandparents, Vernon and Gerry Clark. I remember all the fun presents we got at Ann and Gabe's that came from the Bingo Hall in Myrtle Beach. Gabe was such a fun and happy man. I have very fond memories of him and Ann and their dogs. I think every one of the dogs were named Susy. May he rest in peace.
