J. Long Obituary
He was born March 5, 1927, in Loris, a son of the late Jefferson Marion Long and Mary Miller Long.
He was an attorney, practicing for almost 50 years. He graduated from Myrtle Beach High School, the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was elected as solicitor for the 15th Judicial Circuit in 1962 and served until 1977. He was the municipal judge for the City of Myrtle Beach from 1977 until 1984. In 1984, he was elected to the S.C. Senate, where he served until 1991.
He spent numerous years serving as a little league football, basketball and baseball coach at the Myrtle Beach Recreation Department, where he touched the lives of hundreds of young men.
Survivors include his wife, Judy C. Long; seven children, Sandra J. Post of Raleigh, N.C., Cynthia J. Holbert and her husband, Alex, of Conway, Kenneth D. Long and his wife, Laura, of Columbia, J.M. ''Buddy'' Long III and his wife, Kris, of Myrtle Beach, Lisa L. Gowans and her husband, Douglas, of Conway, J. Scott Long and his wife, April, of Myrtle Beach and Russell B. Long and his wife, Shannon, of Myrtle Beach; his former wife, Gladys Johnson Long of Myrtle Beach; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach. The Rev. Kenneth B. Timmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway.

Cindy, Scott, Russell and Family, we were very saddened to hear about the loss of your Dad. He must have been a wonderful father to have such terrific kids. Dear Judy, Scott, and Family;

I am deeply saddened to hear of Senator Long's passing. I have very fond memories of him while working as his Senate Page in Columbia. It was a highlight of my college years, and a great honor to work with such a kind, caring man. My sympathies and prayers go out to his family. He will truly be missed.
