Myrtle Beach, SC.
Joe Cephus Garrell, age 76, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 1, 2018.
Joe was born in Lumberton, NC a son of the late B. Alton and Doris Woodard Garrell. Joe grew up in Tabor City, NC. He graduated from TC High School and attended
UNC Chapel Hill at North Carolina State graduating with a BA from Chapel Hill and a BS from State on the same day. He worked in family canning (Lady Tabor) international sales and marketing in San Francisco and LITUS Properties Real Estate Brokerage in Myrtle Beach. Joe conceptualized, assembled and implemented
LandBank Properties which purchased over 43% of Carolina Forest. He was very active in musical theater and the arts and was a student of Jay Thompson and Beth Woody. He was a member of Trinity Church, Sons of the American Revolution and Chi Psi. Everybody loved Joe and Joe loved everybody.
Surviving are his loving wife and best friend of 18 years Kathy Foxworth-Garrell, devoted Stepson: Mason Foxworth; Son: Joseph Hunter Garrell; Daughter: Elizabeth Garrell Phelan, Brother; Jimmy Garrell; Grandchildren Riley and Joseph along with two special fur babies Armani and Versace.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, April 6, 2018 at Tabor City Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Old Soles Cemetery, directed by McMillan-Small Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul AME Church, P O Box 1257, Little River, SC 29566

Joe I didn't know you personally. I saw you many times when I was young. You and Jimmy were working the Lady Tabor business. I was very young then but I admired how well you and Jimmy worked together. I joined the Army and didn't return to Tabor City area until 1999. I wrote a book about Tabor City in 2012. I did a lot of research about the Garrell family it amazed me how much you and your family had contributed to Tabor City. I only wish I had got to know you better your contributions to Tabor City are many. God bless you, rest in peace.

Joe was one-of the most unique and loved individuals I have ever known. I have heard our family and friends refer to him over and over again as bigger than life. Joe and I were friends our entire lives. We kept no secrets from each other. Many did not realize that we had a tight knit thread that kept our wonderful friendship bound tightly for over 70 years. Heaven has received a precious, one of a kind angel...the pearly gates have opened wide and Joe has entered with a song and a dance! Rejoice, ye heavenly hosts!

Today is my sad day of learning of my GodFather and friend Joe passing. I will never forget how much a comedian he was on how we would crack jokes no matter what on any note. He has always been apart of our family throughout the years as being there for my mother, her sister and I. He always was comforting to have around, especially when things got tough. Joe was a life long friend of mine. He was there as a friend when my father died when I was 10, witih me in many musicals and plays, always a friend to laugh with as well. Even when I received a high award, Joe's presence made it much more special. It is hard to imagine a world with out Joe.
