John Izykowski Obituary

John Edward Izykowski
October 16, 1946 - December 26, 2015
Longs
John E. Izykowski, 69, of Longs passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Saturday morning at McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Little River after a long illness. Born October 16, 1946 in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late John T. and Mary J. (Yakush) Izykowski.
John was a 1964 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College. He served as a HAWK Fire Control Mechanic on missile radar systems in Korea during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1973. Following his service in the Armed Forces, he began a career in the business and consumer electronics sector, finally retiring from OfficeMax in 2008.
John was a lover of the outdoors, and enjoyed hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, swimming, and golfing. He loved spending time at the beach, in the mountains, or on a cruise ship with his longtime love, Susan Weedmark. Prior to retiring, he spent many happy summers in the Adirondacks at the log home he and his family built together or on vacation in Maine, Cape Cod, Florida, or Lancaster, PA. In his retirement, John volunteered his time at several Grand Strand charitable organizations, worked part time at local golf clubs, and golfed, painted, and traveled extensively.
He will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and his ability to make friends wherever he went, whether on a train in Austria, in line at the Capitol in Washington D.C., or at a gas station in Lancaster. He will be especially missed because of his sensitive and caring nature and his willingness to do anything he could to help and support his friends, family, and even total strangers.
John was predeceased by his parents, John T. and Mary J. Izykowski, his wife, Susan C. Izykowski, and his younger brother Robert. Survivors include his daughters, Julia S. Izykowski, of Summerville and Katie J. Izykowski of Moncks Corner; his longtime partner, Susan J. Weedmark of Longs; and his brothers, Thomas (Denise), Joseph, James (Deborah), and Richard (Linda), all of New York's Capital District. He was also the proud and loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service in his honor at Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Little River on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The family will receive visitors following the service. The funeral will be held later in upstate New York with interment following the ceremony at Memory's Garden Cemetery, Colonie, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1710, New York, N.Y. 10122 (www.orcf.org) or to North Strand Helping Hand, P.O. Box 115, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29597 (www.northstrandhelpinghand.org).
