Shirley Hammond Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Armer Funeral Home, Inc. - Ballston Spa on Mar. 18, 2026.
Shirley E. Hammond, 90, of Greenfield Center, joined her heavenly father on Sunday, March 15, 2026, surrounded by her family.

The third of four children, Shirley was born in Saratoga Springs, NY on May 5, 1935 to Everett and Ethel Peacock. She attended Saratoga Springs High School and upon graduation began working for the GF Harvey Company in Saratoga Springs as a typist and secretary where she became very proficient at shorthand. She would often entertain her children by writing her grocery list or other notes in what looked like nothing more than lines and squiggles and then be able to read it.

After marrying the love of her life Glen D. Hammond, Shirley was content with taking on the very demanding job of homemaker and mother. Raising four children while maintaining a home was certainly an arduous task at times, but she never missed out on becoming a homeroom mom or somehow staying involved with her children throughout school. Always the devoted wife and mother she always placed her family before herself, often filling the role of "nurse, cook, taxi driver, referee, or especially coach". Always the consummate mom..all were performed with plenty of love and care!

Shirley loved to sew, knit, and crochet and was quite a proficient seamstress. At a time when clothing and stuffed animals were actually repaired, you wouldn't find a better mom to handle the task..she loved crafts in general! Shirley loved flowers and her garden, where she always had a particularly green thumb. She was always happy to receive a handpicked bouquet of wildflowers from one of her children or grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for family and even the occasional experimental dish always managed to taste "just like mom cooked it" without missing a beat! She loved to bake as well and actually became a very talented cake baker and decorator. Everyone knew to stay out of the house when she was tasked with making a wedding or anniversary cake for someone!

Devout in her faith in Christ, both Shirley and her late husband Glen were loyal parishioners of the Porter Corners United Methodist Church, and you could depend on them being there on Sundays. Shirley LOVED to sing..and she had the voice to prove it! Whether while playing the piano, singing along to a song on the radio, or for the church choir, she was more than happy to display her singing voice.

Shirley is predeceased by her parents Everett and Ethel Peacock, husband Glen Hammond, grandson Caleb Drumm, granddaughter Rachel Drumm, sister Edna Hellijas, and brother Raymond Peacock.

She is survived by her sons Duane Hammond (Kelly), Randy Hammond (Ann), and Mark Hammond (Sandra), daughter Brenda Cameron (Graeme), grandchildren Elicia Morris (Ricky), Nathaniel Hammond (Cali), Travis Hammond (Morgan), Nicole Sass (Tim), Alyssa Spingarn (Ben), Ashley Sonnone (Brendan), Stephen Hammond, Daniel Drumm, Rebeca Golden (Conor), and Ian Cameron, brother Elthan "Sonny" Peacock (Joan), lifelong best friend Doris Gailor Lista, seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11am Wednesday, March 25 at Porter Corners United Methodist Church, Allen Road, Porter Corners. Burial will follow at 1pm in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville. Memorial contributions in memory of Shirley may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Home of the Good Shepherd, Community Hospice, Sandy Kanar, Rhonda Mayhay, Madison Mayhay, Rev. Deb Peacock, and all who offered support during Shirley's illness.

Your smiling presence and your beautiful voice has been missed and will continue to be missed at Porter Corners UMC. You and Glenn were the backbone of our church for more years than I can count. You were "good and faithful servants". May God be with your family during this sad time.
