Marjorie Rucker Obituary

SURFSIDE BEACH | Marjorie Patterson Rucker, a resident of Surfside Beach, South Carolina for 23 years, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2007, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Marjorie or Marge, was born in Hiddenite, North Carolina on September 29, 1920. The daughter of Millan and Lettie Patterson, she was the youngest of six children.

When Marge was still at an early age, the family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she graduated from Harding High School in 1939.

She worked for Western Union and several stock exchanges after graduation and met Jay William Rucker Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina in 1942. She accompanied him through his Air Corps training, moving frequently from place to place, finding a job and lodging in each town.

They were married on August 25, 1944 and had two sons, Jay William Rucker III and Stephen Patterson Rucker.

She later worked as a manufacturer's representative for General Electric and the B.W. Dixon Company.

Marge always loved the sun, so Marge and Jay moved to Surfside Beach in 1984.

She became an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she was on the Presbyterian Womens council, taught Bible class and served on various committees.

Through the church, Marge tirelessly helped those in need in her community.

Marge was always youthful, full of life, and loved by all of those around her.

She was a devoted wife and mother and a friend to many.

Marge will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Marge is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jay; son, Jay III of Charlotte, North Carolina; son, Steve and daughter-in-law, Claudia of Plantation, Florida; grandsons, Bryan and Matthew of Pembroke Pines, Florida; brother, Aubrey Patterson of Dallas, Texas; nieces, Marjorie Gehring and Judy Eagle of Wilmington, North Carolina, Pat King of Bay City, Texas, Martha Jane Sharpe of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Suzanne Costner of Charlotte, North Carolina; nephews, H.V. Klutz Jr. of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Robert Hoagland of Stanley, North Carolina, Mike McCorkle of Charlotte, North Carolina and Frank Mayberry of South Brunswick, North Carolina.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Zetta Mayberry, Othello McCorkle, Pauline Hall and Eveline Klutz.

Visitation will be at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2061 Glenns Bay Road, Surfside Beach, South Carolina, (843) 650-0313, from 6 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2007.

Mr Jay - The service today was so moving. How wonderful you must feel to know so many admired and loved Miss Marge. She was a treasure to many people. Your years of devotion to her will make memories even sweeter.

Jay Boy - It was so good to see you again. Please take care of yourself.

Steve - Your words were touching and a loving tribute to your mother. You can pass on to your fine sons the joy of having a parent like Miss Marge. It's obvious you cherished her.

Niece Marge - Your words were emotionally sweet, expressing how you felt honored to be her namesake. When she heard you today, I know she also felt honored.

May the love of each other and friends continue to support you. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Uncle Jay,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll always remember the times we spent at Stutt's house, riding around in the Model T, and when Heath and I came to visit you when we were in Myrtle Beach. I'm so glad Maria got to meet Aunt Margie and you, and she still keeps her dalmation that Aunt Margie gave her right by her bed. We love you and you are in our prayers.

Love,
Diana

When I was in my teens in Charlotte, NC in the early 70s, I had the privledge of meeting Marge while I was playing in a rock band with her son Steve. Marge was the perfect "den mother". The band always practiced in her basement while Marge and Mr Rucker and their wonderful dalmation, Cindi endured our noise from beyond the closed door at the top of the stairs.
Marge actually gave us the impression that she liked our music and encouraged us, came and saw us perform, allowed us to continue to make noise in the basement and basically treated us like we were her own children.
She made friends with all of our moms and she, invited us to her beach home in Surfside Beach, lived through all of our happiness and sadness and loved us as much as we loved her. She and Mr Rucker even came to visit me in Florida.
I miss those days with her as our watchful mom and I will deeply miss one of the nicest, friendliest people I have ever known.
I send my profound sympathy and love to my great friend Steve, her son and to Jay & Mr. Rucker. My heart is with you.
