Michael Conway Obituary

Michael Charles Conway
May 1, 1937 - September 11, 2014
Myrtle Beach
Michael Charles Conway passed away at his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at the age of 77 on Thursday, September 11, 2014.
Mike, as he was known to all acquainted with him, was born and raised in the North Hill section of Akron, Ohio, where he attended St. Martha's Grade School and St. Vincent High School. He was a member of the Lone Star fraternity at the University of Akron, graduating with a degree in Education in 1960. Upon completing his degree, Mike served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany from 1960-1962. He returned home and worked as a history teacher in the Akron Public School system at Goodyear Junior High School. He completed his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Akron in 1970 and worked as an attorney in Akron for almost 20 years.
His true passion, and what brought him his greatest fulfillment, was youth sports. Whether as coach, official, tournament director, or just a fan in the stands, Mike touched the lives of countless children, parents and fans. Always encouraging, he had a knack for teaching and making children of all abilities feel successful, confident and proud. From the West Akron Baseball League, where he coached 8-10 year olds for more than 10 years, to the ball fields of Myrtle Beach, where he operated his own business coordinating and scheduling officials for various youth, high school, college and adult athletics, Mike leaves behind a wonderful legacy of community and youth development.
He loved his adopted home of Myrtle Beach, where he spent the last 23 years of his life, and made many deep and lasting friendships. Quick with a story, a joke or a pat on the back, Mike drew people to himself and made friends wherever he went. He delighted most in time spent with his family, especially his seven grandchildren, and they are the better for it. He was a father, grandfather, friend and role model, and he will be terribly missed.
Mike is survived by his former wife, and lifelong friend, Laura Jean Conway; sons, Jim and wife Margie, Jeff and wife Yuhwa, Jason and wife Tiffany; granddaughters, Megan, Laura, Nari, Sadie, Zoe and Violet; grandson, Ryan; brothers, Thomas and Howard and sisters, Mary Alice, Helen and Cathy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen (Gallagher) and Ralph Conway; brother, Ralph; sister, Margaret and mother-in-law, Dorothy James.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 19th from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 20th at 11:00 am at Saint Andrew Catholic Church. Burial will follow the service at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery in Myrtle Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's name to the Pepper Geddings Recreational Center, 3205 North Oak Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 in support of youth programs in the Myrtle Beach area.

Jason! So good to hear from you. You know your Dad was my favorite. I think about him a lot. Karen and I were able to see your Mom and have dinner with her after your Dad passed. She has not changed a bit. She looks great. It hard to believe it's been a year! My Mom and Dad are doing good. We would all love to see you, Jim, Jeff and your families if you are in town.

I am going to be in Kawaii and Maui in two weeks. Where is Jeff at? It would be awesome to see him and meet his family! Can you have him get in touch if he's anywhere near where we are going to be? [email protected] cell is 330 592 4565.

I am a grandma with my daughter Maggie's son Maxwell Howard who is 2 months old. My daughter Molly is due in February too. Time flies, huh? Thanks for getting in touch. Say hello to everyone for me! Xoxo. Colleen

To all the Conway family. My deepest sympathies to you. I know Mike meant a lot to all of you as he did me. Born across the street from each other, attending grade and high school together I have so many fond memories. They will never leave me, like the two of us at 4 years old releasing the brake on your dad's car rolling down the hill having a big rock stop us. God bless you all. I will pray for you and Mike.

Aunt Laura, Jim, Jeff, Jason and families: Uncle Howie, Aunt Edie and I want you all to know how much we loved and will miss your Dad. Howie was always so happy when his brother came to town to visit. He and Mom loved their phone conversations with him as well. I will miss hearing him call me by my childhood nickname. He was one of the few who did and he was my Godfather too. We all feel terrible we could not be with you all this weekend. Please know that our love and prayers are with you always. Love, Colleen

I only had the chance to know Mike for a few months this summer during Youth Basketball League at Pepper Geddings. In that time, is was easy to see that Mike was a true youth sports enthusiast and teacher. He loved watching the kids compete and learn the game of basketball. Mike would always praise the kids for their continuous effort to develop their skills on the court. I'm sure he is back doing what he loves in the sky above. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to know such a kind hearted gentleman.

To Jeannie; James, Jeffrey, Jason and their wives; all Mike's grandchildren and all Mike's brothers and sisters:
Words cannot express my sympathies on your loss. Though I have never met any of you, I feel like I know you all from all those colorful stories Mike shared over the 10 years I lived in the Myrtle Beach area. Believe me when I say they were colorful; as only a picture Mike could paint.
He was a friend, a confidant and a fellow official and I will forever cherish the memory of those times we shared.
In the best Irish tradition, there are many, many pints being raised in Mike's honor here on Earth and in Heaven with all the angels.
RIP and keep them all honest on that Diamond in Heaven.

I am so sadden to hear this unfortunate news. Until this day, I still think of Mike when I re visit the fields I played on growing up! Anytime we were warming up and saw him enter the field as the umpire that night, we were all happy!! What a great role model he was for all!! He will be truly missed but never forgotten!!

I can't think about rec league baseball without thinking of Mike, and he had such an impact on so many lives. He was an excellent role model in MB especially for all the young athletes growing up over the many years. Mike was very personable, friendly, and knew everyone's name. He will certainly be missed.
