Terry Cooper Obituary

SURFSIDE BEACH | Terry Benjamin Cooper, 46, of 10th Ave. North, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at his residence surrounded by his family and friends.

Terry was born and raised in Georgetown County, a son of Edna Tisdale Cooper Evans and the late Warren Hardin Cooper. He attended Andrews Academy and the University of South Carolina. From an early age, Terry wanted to make a difference. He was dedicated to his family, friends and community and brought energy to everything he did.

After college, he lived in Greenville, S.C. for several years. He was an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce where he made many friends and sharpened his political skills. He was especially pleased when he helped to raise over $ 100,000 for Camp Hope, the most money ever raised in a single year.

In 1993, his career brought him back to the coast where he and Elizabeth began raising their family. The desire to be involved and ''do some good'' for his community was the inspiration for him to run for Horry County Council. During his time on Council he was an avid proponent for the South Strand but always had the best interest of all of Horry County in his mind and heart. He loved South Carolina and had the desire to serve as State Senator for this area.

He counted his family as his #1 hobby. He loved to spend the summer in his boat with family and friends and fall Saturdays at Williams Brice Stadium cheering for his Gamecocks.

He was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church where he was an usher. He served on the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was a member of the Murrells Inlet Rotary, the Moose Lodge, the South Strand Republican Club and several other community organizations. Terry was the owner of Cooper Communications in Murrells Inlet.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather Charles Cedric Evans and a very special nephew Ryan Mixon.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Elizabeth Huff Cooper, formerly of Rock Hill; his children, Hannah Rose Cooper, 7 and Ryan Benjamin Cooper, 3; his mother, Edna Tisdale Cooper Evans of Murrells Inlet; his sisters, Jean Cooper Mixon and husband Dennis of Georgetown, Priscilla Cooper of Kingstree; his brother, Warren Hardin Cooper of Murrells Inlet; mother and father-in-law, Henrietta and Phil Huff of Murrells Inlet; sister-in-law, Hazelmarie Huff and brother-in-law Phil L. Huff, III both of Mt. Pleasant; a special niece Shonda Mixon Rogers and husband Brad; nieces Kristy Richardson and husband Lance, Brooke McClary and husband Jamie, Alexandra Cooper, Madelyn Cooper, Ashley McKenna and husband Tom; nephews, Phil L. Huff, IV and Tripp Cooper, five great nieces and three great nephews, together with many special friends, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 528, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576; Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2221 Rosecrans Ave, Suite 131, El Segundo, CA 90245; Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 North Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440; or to Jaycee Camp Hope.

Terry Cooper was a great friend and a great Jaycee who had the talents God gave him to make a difference in the life of his community and state and the hearts of the people he touched...and he did. He inspired, he led, and he confounded those who doubted his ability to overcome challenges. Terry was a champion. He and Elizabeth will always have a special place in my heart. There is one more star shining in the heavens tonight.

Elizabeth, my dear buddy,

Remember those days, years ago, when we were young, dumb, and single and thought things were so bad! We muddled along together and stood up for each other on 2 of the brightest days in our lives. So now, I am standing here for you in your darkest days. We know that the miles are tough, but the friendship and love exceeds the miles. I know how happy you and Terry made each other and the joy that Hannah and Ryan have given you both. You have been dealt a journey that I cannot understand, but I am here to help you along the way. I love you, my dear friend.

See you soon.

As a member of the Myrtle Beach Jaycees, I watched him grow in his leadership abilities. He lived life to the fullest. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Elizabeth, Hannah and Ryan.
