Born: April 19, 1939 in Elmhurst, IL
Died: July 6, 2025 in Ottawa, IL
Marvin G. Graunke, affectionately known as "Marv," passed away peacefully at his home in Ottawa on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the age of 86. A loving father, grandfather, devoted educator, and a man of faith, great strength and wit, Marv leaves behind a lasting legacy in both his family and the many lives he touched throughout his career and community service.
Born on April 19, 1939, to Emil and Pearl (Putz) Graunke, Marv was raised in a family that valued education and service. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Illinois, beginning his career at the U of I Navy Pier campus before moving on to Ottawa Township High School in 1963. His dedication to his profession was evident in everything he did, and it was here that Marv made a lasting impact on countless students.
Marv's career in education spanned nearly four decades, during which he taught physical education, health, and drivers' education. He also coached cross country, girls' basketball, and taught the Color Guard, instilling a love for athletics and teamwork in generations of students. His dedication to fostering the growth and development of young minds was recognized in 1984 when he was honored with the IAHPERD Physical Educator of the Year award. Marv held several offices within the organization, including serving as president of the state chapter for multiple years. He was a relentless advocate for the landmark Title IX civil rights law, which he championed to ensure equal opportunities for women in sports. His contributions to advancing physical education both locally and nationally were immeasurable. Marv's passion for teaching and coaching was evident in every interaction, inspiring countless students and colleagues along the way.
Marv was also an ardent supporter of several community organizations. He devoted countless hours working in Ottawa's Community Garden and meticulously nurtured the Plant-A-Row for the Hungry gardens, donating thousands of pounds to local food pantries. Marv was a proud member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Starved Rock Yacht Club, River City Renegades, and many more community organizations. Whether serving at church, helping with local community projects, or offering a listening ear to those in need, Marv was there-ready to help, no matter the circumstances.
Marv's love for his family was immeasurable. On August 2, 1997, he married Gail Conner, his loving wife of almost 28 years. Marv was the proud father of Cheryl Brockman of Ottawa and Ellen (Chris) Harrison of North Hills, California, and a dedicated stepfather to Elizabeth (Rich) Stewart of Belgrade, Montana, Laura (Steve) Sharp of Ottawa, and Carolyn (Mark) Roach of O'Fallon, Missouri and numerous grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Bette Cvitanovich and Joyce Lowery. Marv was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Adele, and second wife, Joann.
As a father and grandfather, Marv's tough, gruff exterior was balanced by a deep, unwavering love for his family. He wasn't always the one with a smile on his face, but when it mattered, Marv was the rock you could count on. His teasing nature, combined with his supportive presence, made him the one you'd always want in a crisis. He showed his care through action, offering help, advice, and his unique brand of humor, always there when his family needed him most.
