Adele Povilavicius, a well known and loved member of the Boston Lithuanian community, passed away on August 23, 2024 after a short bout of illnesses. Adele was born on October 17, 1928 in the Raseiniu region of Lithuania where she was raised along with her brother, Stasys, and her sister, Danute, both of whom are deceased. Adele came to the United States in 1965 and lived in Boston until she married Lithuanian opera soloist, Benediktas Povilavicius, and settled with him in their home in Arlington, Massachusetts, where Adele resided until her death. Adele was a staunch member of St. Peter Lithuanian Parish in South Boston. She worked tirelessly within the parish and her name became synonymous with the after mass "kavute" that she and her cadre of friends prepared every Sunday for more than ten years. Her cakes and tortes were a delight and enjoyed by many. She enjoyed all handicrafts and her crocheted, embroidered and knit projects were works of art. Her flower and vegetable gardens were the envy of her Arlington community. Although Adele never had her own children, she was Godmother to many children here and in Lithuania and reveled in their achievements. Adele's relatives in Lithuania mourn her loss and are forever grateful to Laima Dumcius, who cared for Adele for the last twelve years of her life with love and compassion. Laima cared for her as she would have cared for her own mother and therefore, it no surprise that Adele considered Laima as family, as a dear and kind niece.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, August 31 from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Peter Lithuanian Church, 75 Flaherty Way, South Boston followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. The internment will be at the cemetery on the grounds of the Immaculate Conception Convent in Putnam CT. Lunch will be served at her favorite Greek restaurant in Putnam CT. Friends are sincerely invited to attend.
