ADOLPH HUTTER Obituary

HUTTER, Adolph M. "Dolph" Jr., MD Of Needham, Massachusetts, passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 86, due to natural causes. He lived an extraordinary life as a loving husband and father of five and as a world-renowned clinical cardiologist. Dolph was born February 22, 1937, in Fond du Lac Wisconsin, the son of Adolph M. Hutter, MD and Janet Kay Hutter. He attended high school at St. Mary's Springs Academy, college at Georgetown University (1959) and medical school at the University of Wisconsin (1963). He completed his medical residency at the University of Rochester – Strong Memorial Hospital and then he served at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Dolph came to Boston and the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1968 as a cardiology fellow, was hired on staff two years later and never left. Over his 55-year tenure at the MGH he became a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and was elected by his peers across the country as President of the American College of Cardiology. He had a passion for sports cardiology and was the founding director of the MGH Cardiovascular Performance Program. He served as a medical doctor and cardiologist for the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins for over forty years. Dolph has been described by his colleagues as a "larger-than-life titan of cardiology," and an "MGH stalwart through and through like one of granite rocks of the Bullfinch building." He had a passion for teaching medical residents, cardiology fellows and cardiologists across the country and around the world. Thousands have been educated by his informative and entertaining "Update in Cardiology Conference" which has been a perennial favorite since he started it in the 1970s. Dolph is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 63 years, Sylvia Murray Hutter. They shared a magical life, full of love, family, friends and travel. He leaves behind five children, all of whom are doctors having experienced the passion and zeal that their father had for his profession: Jae Hutter Geller and husband, Alan Geller of Redmond, WA, Joseph Dolph Hutter and wife, Julia Hutter of Middleburg, VA, Elizabeth Kay Hutter and husband, Christopher Patterson of Los Altos Hills, CA, Matthew Murray Hutter and wife, Amy deLone Hutter of Weston, MA and Jonathan J. Hutter and wife, Kristin Manning of Seattle WA. His 13 grandchildren will greatly miss him: Daniel, Ben, and Adam Geller, Sophie and Bella Hutter, Grace, Sarah, and Sylvie Hutter Patterson, Max, Will, and Anna Kay Hutter and Anna Rose and Henry Hutter. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" (Hutter) Ryan Douglas. A private funeral mass for family will be held at St. Joseph Parish in Needham, followed by burial at Glenwood Cemetery in South Natick. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in his honor. For online guestbook, gfdoherty.com George F. Doherty & Sons Needham 781 444 0687

I have fond memories of my brother-in-law Dolph and as I recently lost my husband I am thinking of asking Dolph's wife, one of my 4 sisters, if she would like to spend any of our remaining years with me in Florida, on the delightful little barrier island where our parents also resided. This dream may take time as I am currently in the process of rebuilding what remains from the devastating destruction endured from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Dolph was a personal friend as well as my cardiologist for many years. I really loved his style, spirit, directness with empathy, and his intolerance for phony things. It hurts our world when people like him pass away. He was so good to me, and I´m so appreciative that I got the chance to be his friend. Dolph, I look forward to seeing you again in the next better world my friend.

So very many years ago, I worked at MGH. Dr. Hutter was kind to everyone. An exceptional physician, he was extraordinarily regarded highly by his colleagues, students, and of course patients.

I was a patient of Dr. Hutter's for over 20 years until his retirement and came to look forward to our periodic visits for his direct, but pleasant manner and our non cardiac conversations about the state of the world. I was proud to be under his care because I knew there was nobody better to look after and educate me about my condition. MGH is one of the world's great hospitals because of people like Dr. Hutter.

I did not work with Dr. Hutter but would run into him many early mornings as we entered the hospital. He was always so pleasant. A true gentleman. Thank you Dr. Hutter.

Most of my relationship with Dolph was as a medical student and resident. He was a great teacher and always had time to do it. He did not have to, but he did. I remember him fondly.

The cardiology community is saddened by the loss of Dr. Hutter, a physician who left an indelible mark on the profession. He will be forever remembered by generations of cardiologists as an outstanding clinician, teacher, mentor and advocate. His devotion to family, and the love he shared with Sylvia, are the important life lessons he left for all of us. Laurie and I send our most sincere condolences.

My sincere condolences to the Hutter family, and in particular to Sylvia who we were delighted to sit with at many an MGH function, and to Matt who I had the pleasure to work with closely over many years. Dr. Hutter was a giant in cardiology locally and internationally; I have fond memories of walking across the hall from my office to his to discuss patients. For many years Dr. Hutter shared this office with Roman DeSanctis and said office was the emotional and intellectual center of MGH Cardiology.I was greatly honored by Dr.Hutter's many challenging patients referrals over the years. We are greatly diminished by his passing.

Dear Sylvia - I had the privilege of talking to Dolf on the phone a few weeks ago and he sounded very weak, but as usual wanted to know how I was doing while I was calling to ask how he was doing! That was always his way, wanting to know how the other person was doing! He was a great doctor and friend to Rob and me, and leaves a legacy of good deeds behind. My sincere condolences to you and your family and may Dolf rest in peace. He will be missed.
