Obituary published on Legacy.com by Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home on Dec. 20, 2025.
Our beautiful wife, mother and grandmother, Agnes Culver, passed peacefully away on December 18, 2025. Agnes was born in
Paterson, New Jersey on May 14, 1929, the first of six children born to Richard and Emma Visser Roorda. She married Edwin J. Culver on September 2, 1950 and together raised a beautiful family of three children in
Port Jervis, New York.
Along with her siblings, Agnes grew up with the committed duties of farm life. As a young adult, she was a seamstress at Miss Swank in Middletown, followed by various types of clerical jobs until moving to Port Jervis and raising a family. There she worked at the Grand Union until her retirement in the early 90's. Her friendly disposition was often recognized outside of work by many of the frequent Grand Union customers.
Agnes was a member of Drew United Methodist Church, she served a short time as a Sunday School teacher; was a member of the Drew United Methodist Women, visited shut-ins, and participated in church luncheons, dinners and bazaars.
Over the years Agnes took pleasure in collecting Bradford Plates, was a faithful viewer of the Jack LaLanne Show, hummed along to music from WDLC radio, bowled in leagues at Minisink Lanes, volunteered at the gift shop at the hospital, enjoyed books by Nicholas Sparks and baked award-winning apple pies and snickerdoodles. She often enjoyed family trips to Lake George, Lancaster, Pennsylvania and the Jersey Shore.
Agnes was a devoted mother and a wonderful role model. She instilled her values, respect, courtesy, spoiled us with her love, and saw the best in every person she met. She was the perfect example of kindness, devotion, generosity and warmth.
Agnes is predeceased by her husband, Edwin J. Culver, in December 2022; daughter Susan E. Howard and her husband Roger A. Howard of Matamoras, Pennsylvania; grandson Corey J. Kolvenbach of Shokan, New York; brother Sidney Roorda and sister-in-law Charlotte of Florida; brother John Roorda of Vermont; and brother-in-law Joe Robles of Middletown, New York.
She is survived by her son Robert J. Culver and Lori of
Port Jervis, New York; son Ronald E. Culver and Annette of Baldwinsville, New York; grandson Matthew J. Culver and Brittany of Mechanicville, New York; grandson Eric R. Culver and Catie of Lewis Center, Ohio; grandson Roger M. Howard and Erin of Matamoras, Pennsylvania; grandson Ronald E. Culver Jr. and Ellie of Katy, Texas; four great-grandsons Eli Ronald, Ashton, Kai and Caden; brother Fred Roorda and Lora of Fort Meyers, Florida; sister Sylvia of Middletown, New York; sister Joyce of Middletown, New York; sister-in-law Edwina of Essex Junction, Vermont; several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of friends.
Agnes was a compassionate and loving person with a gentle disposition, beautiful blue eyes and a smile which would light up the room. She was the joy of our family and we will continue to carry her love for us forever in our hearts. She will be remembered dearly by all who knew her and we thank the Lord for blessing our lives with her. We'll love you always, Mom. Rest in peace.
