AJ Van Norstrand Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 22, 2025.
Jim Van Norstrand, a cherished husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on August 20, 2025, at his home in Round Rock, Texas, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on March 24, 1961, in Poughkeepsie, New York to his late father Albert and mother Ruth, Jim's life was defined by his warmth, intelligence, and the laughter he brought to all who knew him.

Jim's years were spent in the town of his birth, where he attended Our Lady of Lourdes High School. His love for learning and natural aptitude in sciences paved the way for his higher education at Syracuse University, where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. Armed with his education and a passion for innovation, Jim embarked on a successful career at IBM, where he was respected and admired by his colleagues for his intellect and ingenuity. He retired from IBM after working for forty years as a STSM Senior Technical Staff Member in 2024.

Jim was a devoted husband to his loving wife and high school sweetheart, Margaret Walsh Van Norstrand, with whom he shared countless cherished moments over their forty years together. Jim was equally proud of his children, Eric Van Norstrand and Ellen (Van Norstrand) Patterson, and he found joy in their every achievement and loved watching them grow up to be wonderful individuals. His son-in-law, John Patterson, was welcomed into the family with open arms. Jim was a loving Dad to all his golden retrievers. He is also survived by his sister Paula Rembisz of Hyde Park, NY, sister and brother in-law Kim and Bill Kummerow of Webster, NY, as well as many loved in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Family was the cornerstone of Jim's life, but his interests and hobbies also painted the picture of a man who loved life and lived it fully. An avid collector, Jim could often be found scouring antique shops for hidden treasures. His taste in music was the soundtrack to many gatherings, where his legendary cooking skills were on display. Jim's fishing adventures were only matched by the tales of his memorable moments with his friends and family. He also loved playing video games with his children and friends. Most of all, he was known for his belief in the art of giving – not just of material items, but of time, stories and moments.

We bid farewell to Jim Van Norstrand, a man who was not only accomplished in his professional endeavors but who also enriched the world with his generous heart. He will be lovingly remembered and forever held in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life. Jim's journey on earth has concluded, but the memories he created will continue to be a source of comfort and joy to those he left behind.
