Henry Alvin Stone, Jr., age 79, passed away peacefully September 11, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, September 14, at Thomasville First Methodist Church. Reverend Carrie Myers will officiate. A private family interment service will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Al was born to Ellen Eugenia Vickers Stone and Henry Alvin Stone May 9, 1945, in Albany, Ga. He grew up in Gainesville and Douglas, where he met his wife of 58 years, Jean Powell Stone. Al attended Emory at Oxford and Emory University, where he pledged Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He then attended University of Georgia Pharmacy School, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, graduating Cum Laude in 1969.
Al began a long career of 43 years with Thomas Drug Stores in Thomasville, where Broad Street became his second home. He loved his customers, especially the families he served for several generations.
When he did have time away from work, he enjoyed golf, travel, and hunting turkeys with his buddies. Never at a loss for words, he loved talking about the historical biographies he read. His favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren play golf, softball, and baseball.
Survivors include his wife Jean Powell Stone; two sons-Hank Stone (Marnee Gaines), and Byron (Barbaree Jordan); four grandchildren-Karson Stone, Elli Stone, Brady Stone and Aidan Stone; two brother-in-laws: Roy Powell (Kay) and Kenny Powell (Donna), plus numerous nephews and nieces. Certainly mention must be made of his dog Chance, a rescue he bonded with for over a year.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The First Methodist Church of Thomasville, Georgia, 425 N Broad St, Thomasville, GA 31792 or The Thomasville Humane Society, 180 Big Star Drive Thomasville, GA 31757.
