Alan N. Cafferty, 84, of Smithfield, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at his home. He was the husband of Carolyn A. (Silvio) Cafferty. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Francis H. and Alice (Wood) Cafferty.

Alan worked as a school teacher in both the Johnston and Warwick School Departments. He went on to become the Assistant Director of Special Education for the Warwick School Department for over 20 years, and upon retirement, he worked as the Director of Special Education for the Valley Community School.

Alan served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard and the 76th Division of United States Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel after over 30 years of service.

Besides his wife, Alan is survived by his children, Ryan Cafferty (Alicia), Kevin Cafferty (Emilie), and Linda Cafferty; six grandchildren, Gavin, Genevieve, Gwendolyn, Clio, Alexander, and Fletcher; and his brother, Dennis Cafferty.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at 8 am from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in St. Michael’s Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours Monday 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
