A HS Classmate and Friend "68
It saddens me that we never finished our last phone call.
There are so many memories that come to mind. Friday nights we all met after work at the New City Pub, Howie was tending bar and you would see Al at the jukebox putting in his roll of coins buying all the Oldie songs, he would stand in front of jukebox singing the songs, playing his Kazoo, he motivated strangers and of course his best friends to sing and shuffle along to the Oldies, we eventually moved on to closed the Marshmallow with a song on the Jukebox Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight( Well it's time to go ). The year was "69, Mets won the WS, Shamsky and Linz own the bar, all the Mets had the celebration there and Al and his friends happened to be in the right place. Another occassion, His friends followed AL to the Appollo Theater to see the Cleftones return in 1969, Herbie Cox, Charlie James and Warren Corbin to name a few in the group. Al wanted to get an autograph from the group, so we stood by the side curtain on stage, wait to when they were finished, but somehow we ended up as backup dancers to the Cleftones as we shuffled across the stage from one side to another behind the group, it's amazing what beer can do if you drink enough of it. We used to go to Sunnyside Gardens and Madison Sq Garden to see the fights, not on TV back then, Al loved to go to see Jerry Quarry. Al went on to serve his country, joining the Navy following in his Dad's footsteps, he shipped out to Guantanamo Bay. We kept in touch, Al ended up running a little radio office playing his Doo-Wops to the soldiers stationed there with his records and recordings of Gus Gossert Shows, eventually transferred to Iceland where he fulfilled his duty and received an Honorable Discharge. Upon returning home, we didn't miss a beat, Friday nights at the New City Pub, playing Heart & Soul, Larry Chance and the Earls "Remember Then" and "Those Oldies But Goodies" By Little Ceasar & The Romans. Al was often seen snapping his fingers, dancing and singing along to the Do Wops every chance he could. He always had a 45rpm record player, to plug in and play his songs when he needed to.
Al lived life with a smile, a laugh, a song , he danced, play the Kazoo, he lit up the room, and, he also brought tears to our eyes. He will be missed.

Al, won't be forgotten, when we hear those oldies playing, we will be thinking of you.

I enjoyed talking to Al, at the Kearsing Edwards American Legion Post every 1st Thursday of the month, about DOO-WOP and even playing Rock n´ Roll Trivia. We both learned a lot about the good old days of Rock n´ Roll. It´s going to feel odd seeing an empty chair and not hearing the music he would play upon requests.
Rest in Peace, Al.
