Obituary of Alan F. Haught
Alan F. Haught, 89, of South Glastonbury passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, after a short illness. He made his home in Glastonbury for over 60 years, raising his family here surrounded by a wide circle of friends and neighbors.
Alan graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS in
Bethesda, MD as a Westinghouse winner, was a physics major at Amherst College, and went on to graduate studies at Princeton University where he earned a Ph.D. in physics in 1962. He worked for many years at the UTC research labs in East Hartford and held many patents before retiring early and starting a second career as a science teacher at Weaver High School in Hartford.
Alan was a nationally ranked archer, former President of the CT Archery Association, and an accomplished runner, competing in the Boston, Newport, and New York City marathons. Amazingly, his best times were under 3 hours, even into his forties. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed starting seeds in his greenhouse in the winter months. Alan loved to create and build, often juggling many projects simultaneously (though not always completed!) to the amusement of those who knew him best. He coached youth sports and spent summers at the Woodledge Swim Club cheering on his 4 kids who all joined the swim team. He loved boating on the Connecticut River and helped start the GHS crew club. He was a long-time mentor of students competing in the CT Science Fair, bringing the same enthusiasm to his children's and grandchildren's science fair projects.
Alan loved his Coca-Cola, black jelly beans, and homemade rhubarb pie. He also enjoyed a good glass of bourbon and Ginos pizza on Sunday nights.
He was married to his adoring wife, Carol Dixon Haught, for 53 years until her passing in 2012. He found love again with Stephanie O'Sullivan until her death in 2017. He enjoyed life to the fullest in his last years with his beloved partner, Kay Hill.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents Frederic and Florence Haught and two sisters, Jean Haught and Linda Powell. He is survived and will be fondly remembered by his son, David and wife Annamarie of Glastonbury and daughters Katherine and her husband Thomas Wandel of Austin PA; Susan and her husband Joseph Harten of Charlotte NC; and Deborah Fischer of Franklin MA. Alan is also survived by 13 grandchildren (Katie, John, Scott, Spencer, Weston, Kelsey, Calvin, Tristan, Jackson, Graeme, Cartland, Alex, and Camille), 14 great-grandchildren, 2 nephews and 3 nieces.
The family is planning a celebration of life this summer, as Alan would have appreciated for his 90th birthday. For on-line condolences, please visit www.mulryanfh.com. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations in his memory for Alzheimer's research at alzinfo.org/donate.
