Albert J. "Buddy" Mangini Sr. of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025, after a long illness. He was 85 years old.
Born on July 26, 1939, to the late Albert L. and Nancy (Musto) Mangini, Buddy was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and dedicated community leader. Buddy was the proud father of Albert Mangini Jr. and his dear friend Martha Hanlon of Wakefield, MA, and a loving grandfather to Anthony J.Mangini & his wife Celia Mangini of Los Angeles CA. He was the cherished brother of Frederick Mangini and his wife Rosilda of Salem, NH, Joseph Mangini and his wife Margy of Missouri, Nancy Pastore and her husband John of Billerica, and MaryAnn Matarazzo and her husband Ron of Winthrop. He was also the former husband of Genevieve "Jeannie" Mangini.
A master public speaker, Buddy attended BC High School, graduating with the Class of 1957, and later studied at St. Michael's College. His commitment to service was evident through his extensive involvement in numerous organizations. A longtime member of the Kiwanis Division 14, he served as president three times and was honored as a Lieutenant Governor, receiving the prestigious Red Jacket. He was also a past president and member of the East Boston Chamber of Commerce and played a pivotal role in organizing the renowned Columbus Day Parade, a celebrated event that drew crowds from near and far. Buddy was an active member of the Sons of Italy Sempre Avanti, a board member of the K Trust, and a dedicated Knight of Columbus, 2962, Bishop Cheverus 4th Degree. His service extended to the East Boston Social Center, the YMCA, and the Salesian Boys and Girls Club, where he was a guiding presence. He also served as president of the Sacred Heart Church board in East Boston and was a committed member of the Democratic Ward Committee. Buddy's life was defined by his passion for community, his love for bringing people together, and his unwavering dedication to public service. He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, leadership, and commitment to East Boston and beyond.
Family and friends will honor Buddy's life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home on Wednesday, March 19, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and again on Thursday morning at 8:30 AM before processing to St. Joseph - St. Lazarus Church for a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. Services will conclude with Buddy being laid to rest at Winthrop Cemetery, Belle Isle section.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Buddy's name be made to the Salesian Boys and Girls Club of East Boston, 150 Byron Street, East Boston, MA 02128, in honor of his lifelong dedication to youth and community service. May he rest in eternal peace.
