His Story
Albert H. Rice was born in Baltimore Maryland on March 11, 1932 to Albert James Rice and Virgie Marie De Coursey. He was granted his wings on May 31, 2025.
He received his education in Baltimore MD, where he attended Booker T Washington Middle School. He made history in Mt Washington becoming the first black lacrosse player. He also enjoyed boxing and football.
Albert's love for horses began at Pimlico Race Track, where he got his first job walking horses. That early start sparked a lifelong passion. Over time, he worked his way up-first learning to shoe horses, then galloping them, and eventually training them. As he grew older and more experienced, he developed a second passion: travel.
He was known as the Cowboy. Some knew him as Pete, others knew him as Baltimore. a.k.a. King Peter and a.k.a. Mr. Wonderful.
Eventually moving to
Wilmington, Delaware, he continued to travel for horse races but also moonlighted as a longshoreman, becoming a member of the International Longshoremen's Association Local 1694 (ILA 1694). Don't worry about it(insider). Due to his hard working nature he became a Forman of Gang #2. He was a straight shooter, who made his presence known.
Albert combined both loves seamlessly. He traveled to major horse racing events like the Belmont Stakes, Preakness, and Kentucky Derby. He also enjoyed dog racing in Florida, always chasing the thrill of the sport. But it wasn't just about the races-Albert cherished the experiences along the way. He especially loved New Orleans, where he immersed himself in the Mardi Gras parades, the Jazz Fest, and reconnecting with good friends.
Albert was preceded in death by his father Albert James Rice, mother Virgie Marie De Coursey, sister Myrtle Washington, wife Anna E. Rice, daughters Denise Clary, Tracey Rice, and son Marcel Rice.
Albert was a devoted, loving and proud father. He leaves to cherish his memory; four sons, Ricky Rice, Rene Rice, Shawn Rice and Mark Maddox; two daughters, Nicki Brown and Deatrice Amed; his beloved friend, Derice Bailey; a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grands and great-great grands, and many others loving family and friends.
The late Albert James and Virgie Rice raised two wonderful children. Albert H. and the late Myrtle Washington. Although one formally went into education, both taught valuable life lessons.
If you had the opportunity to meet Albert you'd know he was a special kind of person. He was like a father to most, well respected and loved by all who knew him. He will be forever in our hearts.
