Obituary of Albert Mario Scalzo, Jr.
Albert Mario Scalzo Jr., 89 of Yorktown Heights, New York, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the VA hospital in West Haven CT.
Born on August 3, 1936, in Peekskill, New York. He was the devoted son of Albert Mario Scalzo Sr. and Mary Biacchi Scalzo.
Al grew up in Peekskill, where his journey began at the Cardinal Farley Military Academy on a full scholarship. There he distinguished himself as the leader of the band and played 1st trumpet-foreshadowing a life of commitment, service, and joy. After graduation, he answered the call to serve his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.
Following his military service, Al returned to New York and later worked at the United States Military Academy at West Point before retiring. Together with his beloved wife Sylvia - with whom he shared over 66 years of marriage - he built a warm and laughter-filled home in Yorktown Heights. It was love at first sight: Al had dreamed of Sylvia even before meeting her. When they were both working at The Reader's Digest, he saw her from afar, convinced a friend to introduce them, and the rest is history. It was love at first sight, which lasted a lifetime and beyond.
Al's proud children - Sharon Scalzo Laff (Mark Laff), Kenneth Scalzo (Catherine), and Sandra Wolstencroft (Mark) - were raised in the home he built with the help of family members including Uncle Fred and Uncle George. His legacy continues in the hearts of his grandchildren Alison, Daniel, Dennis, Patrick, Sarah and Trevor, and his eight great-grandchildren: Violet, James, Jude, Alex, Connor, Emmett, plus newly born twins Cedric and Sutton. He was also the honorary dad and granddad to the Takacs family. He was affectionately known as Papa Al.
Professionally, Al dedicated a good portion of his career working in IT for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. A devout Catholic all his life, his faith guided him in his work and his life. In his free time, he loved camping, fishing, and the sky itself - his true love was flying. He was a small-engine pilot and proud owner of a Cessna.
Al's quick wit, humorous stories, and genuine listening ear meant something to everyone who knew him. Above all, he will be remembered for his unwavering love for his wife and family, his laughter, and his exemplary character. We were privileged to be raised by a man who supported us, challenged us, and set an example for us all. His legacy lives on in the joy and love he shared with family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, 414 Washington Street, Peekskill, NY, 10566, on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am
Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of the Assumption on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 11:30 am.
Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery, 1055 Oregon Road, Cortlandt Manor, NY 10567
