ALBERT LEMUEL "AL" SMITH III
June 29, 1948 - December 12, 2025
Albert (Al) Lemuel Smith, III, 77, died December 12, 2025, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Al was born June 29, 1948 in Charles City, Va., the son of the late Albert Lemuel Smith, Jr. and Mary Ruffin Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother and wife, John and Barbara Smith; sister and husband, Betsi and Al Bartee, and sister, Susan Smith-Marchi.
Al graduated in 1966 from Augusta Military Academy prior to attending Virginia Tech where he was a member of the Virgina Tech Corps of Cadets and graduated in 1970. Al was an active US Army Reservist, retiring in 1992 as Lieutenant Colonel after serving in the Army for 23 years.
Al enjoyed many years working in the Beef Cattle industry as an employee of Neuhoff Farms in Dublin and was named Virginia Cattleman of the Year, National Commercial Producer and Virginia Commercial Producer. Following his career as a farmer, Al was an auctioneer, realtor and entrepreneur.
Al served on many boards over the years, including Big Brothers, Virginia Ducks Unlimited, NRV Hunters Helping Kids, Virginia BCIA, Beef Improvement Federation, Radford University Wesley Foundation, Pulaski County Planning Commission and Board of Equalization, My Brothers Crossing, Snowville Masonic Lodge #159 AF&AM, Roanoke Kazim Shriners, and The Road Runners, just to name a few.
Al leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Shelia Fagg Smith of Fairlawn Va.; brother, Nelson Smith and wife Patti of Charles City, Va.; brother-in-law, Gene Marchi; sister-in-law, Sherry Fagg Williams and husband Robert (Tiger) of Fairlawn, Va. His children, Shannon Jeirles of Forest, Va. Sean Smith and his wife Christine of Blacksburg, Va., Katlyn Vaught and her husband, Joe, of Fairlawn, Va., and Blake Smith and wife Katie of Dublin, Va. Al also leaves behind seven beautiful grandchildren who so lovingly referred to him as "Pappy". They include Marina Jeirles, Brandon Jeirles, Morgan Jeirles, Conner Smith, Avery Smith, Julia (JJ) Smith and Jett Vaught, along with nieces, Carey Moede, Jessica Medema, Angela Summers, Sarah Smith, Jennifer Warner, and nephews, Drew Brown, Stuart Smith, Hunter Williams and Trevor Williams.
Al had many lifelong friends from Charles City, Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, Hokie Club, Ducks Unlimited and other walks of life. If you were ever on a duck or dove hunt with Al Smith you were guaranteed to have a great time and maybe enjoy a time of reflection and planning the next hunt at the local RTC, Patty's Kitchen or in the back yard for the annual September Dove Hunt dinner.
Funeral arrangements for Al include visitation at Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, Va., Wednesday evening, December 17th, from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service conducted by Snowville Lodge #159 AF&AM. The Funeral service will be held at Mullins Funeral Home at 12 noon on Thursday, December 18th, with Rev. Teresa Tolbert and Rev. J. T. Clark officiating. Interment services will conclude at Southwest Virginia Veteran's Cemetery following the service with full military rights followed by a gathering of family and friends at the Dublin Lions Club across the street from the cemetery.
The Family wishes to express our gratitude to Dr. Matt and Tara Skewes and Dr. Sheenu Sheela for their many years of excellent health care and to the doctors, nurses and staff of Roanoke Memorial and New River Valley Medical Center.

The Smith family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.
