Alberta Mary Nieberding

(nee Scharf) age 94, daughter of Frances and Nicholas Scharf (deceased), beloved wife of 58 years to James E. Nieberding (deceased); loving mother of Christopher J. (deceased; Cindy), James F. (Renée), and Catherine Martis (Michael); beloved grandmother to Matthew (Natalie), Maria, Grace, Bridget, Katie, Danny and Stephen; great-grandma to Athena, Evelyn Rose and soon-to-be born Edward; sister to Anne, Robert, Joseph and William (all deceased). Aunt of many loving nieces and nephews.
Alberta was born in Belleville, NJ on July 27, 1930 and moved to Lakewood, OH in 1933 due to her father's job with the Erie Railroad. Alberta loved to ride the trains back to New York and New Jersey to visit family. She was an excellent ice skater, loved her childhood home on Alameda Ave. and was devoted to her mother after her father's early death in 1951. The family home on Elmwood Ave. was a haven of peace and a place where all loved to gather for Mom's excellent food, bakery, conversation, and laughter. Alberta was a teacher of Latin, English, and French, was a substitute teacher at St. Edward and St. Ignatius High Schools, and met James while teaching CCD classes at St. Ignatius of Antioch in Cleveland. She was a graduate of St. Rose grade school in Cleveland, Lourdes Academy in Cleveland, and St. Bonaventure University in NY where Alberta was among the first women to attend and graduate. Her will to live, love and teach were immeasurable, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were an immense source of joy. Alberta's quiet, strong, and steadfast Catholic faith through the joys and sorrows of life served her well and lives on in her children. Thank you, Mom and Dad!
Alberta passed away peacefully at home of natural causes surrounded by family, on Sunday, June 29, 2025. Funeral Mass at St. Angela Merici Church (20970 Lorain Rd., Fairview Park) Monday, July 7 th at 10 am. Interment Holy Cross. Friends may call at the McGORRAY-HANNA FUNERAL HOME OF WESTLAKE, 25620 Center Ridge Rd. (West of Columbia Rd.) Sunday, July 6 th from 1 – 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Kizito Foundation (https://www.stkizitofoundation.org/about-us/); Catholic Relief Services; or a Pro-Life charity of your choice, a cause dear to Alberta's heart.
